The spacing is different. It was done on purpose, to prevent cross over use of both brands, as they were in direct competion back then. This was a pretty big subject all those years ago.. Spacing on suntpur and shimano cassettes is NOT the same!

Easy job, there are two small Phillips screws underneath the back of the shifter (to the left of your thumb if you were shifting) take them out (dont lose!) with a small screwdriver, & a plastic plate will pop off, exposing the cable ! :)

I have two, a completely original 1989 602lx, with Madison airgrips! & an 89' 603, but with a Mountian LX group. Shame I have problem posting pics on here mind ... ! :( ill keep trying. Not good with tech stuff, hence my love for all things retro. (not including my downhill bike though haha!)
