    Chainrings spacing

Neco is budget but generally OK. A M770 or possibly an earlier generation like a square taper version of M750 complete chainset would be a good choice. Photo below for indication only. Sadly, our bike industry in terms of equipment get's locked into periods with some fore-aft time wise, but...

KARMA - TDF in a tin! NOW GONE

😍 How cool. Certainly will provide better entertainment than all the Xmas bollxo.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

Nice. Perfection though ..... seat-angle another +0.5 degrees or so, lay back / offset traditional road Nitto S65 seat-post for that vintage Ideale saddle instead of an in-line post. It would tie in better with the Nitto stem too. Very nice and classical use of silver.

Not retro, crank profile probably more suitable for a road bike.

DAWES CX Reynolds 653 Custom - Seeking Information

Agree CX being very traditional, but STIs came in around 1990. https://www.rouleur.cc/blogs/the-rouleur-journal/total-integration-total-revolution-how-shimano-s-sti-shifting-changed-cycling Not sure, but I guess downtube cable adjusters / stops were already available earlier?

Reported fake Mavic Crossmax SLR on ebay, guess their response?

 Agree with @hamster - what pisses me off with this is Mavic is not a massive company, just staying afloat in a competitive market with a downturn, and legally will be a costly nightmare for them to crack down. Good on you @henrysthreeironbands for flagging. As the saying goes, if...

DAWES CX Reynolds 653 Custom - Seeking Information

Welcome. Very nice. No bottle cage either - proper CX race bike - no time to have a drink. Perhaps a moderator should move this to the road section?

What a great discovery there @Mikey08 - you have no idea when I clicked around and saw this how it made me happy 😍 https://www.augustehandmade.com/en-rouge-noir 1953 Pug Randonneur for a base. For me this is what it is about. What is there not to like about this on many levels? My own...

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

Goa Dakar MTB group: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/mavic-paris-gao-dakar-group-set.449393/ Not aware of any others and very rare. The underbar wishbone shifters are rare and sought after: EDIT: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1991-mavic-groupset.468090/ No brake set :confused...

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

Perhaps a look into the time line of patents may provide some clues? Ergopower (1992) and STI (1990) are different, and perhaps not much room in the middle for any other cable actuated brake / shifting? Perhaps that is why Mavic opted for electronic (rear) shifting (1993)?

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

 Surely, it's all debateable but still not clear? @Retrorockit - come on. Practically _all_ bikes shown in this entire thread are rideable. In fairness to you, for sure with some of these bikes you would (and want to) treat them with respect and not push them over their design remit...

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

To let loose a bit, I am known to have a tipple, I think the French bike industry is like going through the pain barrier. Survivors in the downs may come out strong. For how long who knows. There is certainly affection that France is not wiped out entirely in the bike industry and more recent...

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

Have heard this before, and just found at least this piece (found nothing else like a newspaper clipping, nothing on the Mavic site either): https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mavic ".....As for the AVA brand, it disappeared around 1981. Ironically, Rigida was in turn bought by another wheel...

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

Wolber: https://www.soissons.fr/2022/12/08/wolber/ At least for the pneumatics, was under Michelin from 1972, plant doors closed in 2000. 451 employees. Not sure what happened to the rim / wheel business that was a legacy of Super Champion.

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

Vitus was a brand, not a company. A good read using your browser's translate. https://encycloduvelo.fr/vitus-atelier-de-rive/ "the company employed 190 employees in 1990, only about fifteen when Look bought it." Today just another brand name dusted off and gone elsewhere...

What Happened to The French: Fin d'une époque?

Probably like a few here, the scare of Mavic "almost" going under a couple of years ago (due to a weird holding / management structure) felt like a blow to the stomach. Don't really know how they are doing at the moment especially with the general crisis of the bike industry. Nice to see...

Thread owner put's his foot down with a firm fist. 😁 👍 While of course some discussions and some reproductions can help restorations I need to agree with you. As long as these bikes are out there and still getting discovered they should be documented, learnt about and enjoyed. There are plenty...
