Viva le Tour [1962] Best Tour de France Short Film

Great film. I've seen it before some time ago but nowt wrong with seeing it again! Some excellent shots of some of the great stars of the day (eg. Baldini, Van Looy, Bahamontes, Anquetil) and a chance to see what colours the team jerseys actually were rather than the 50 shades of grey seen in...

I may be completely wrong here (what's new!) but didn't the Unibet team have to close because the French cycling authorities didn't allow anything to do with betting to be involved in cycling? Or was it another team perhaps?

    Tubs for 27inch wheels

All 'normal' tubs are the same size, near enough to 700C as makes no difference. There was a slight problem BITD when running 27"HP's in that the brake shoe alignment was different between the 2 sizes so, when riding out to races and carrying your 'sprints', as well as changing wheels, brake...

The Weird and Wonderful Bicycle Components Thread!

    First Ever Steel/Other Bike Owned

After buying a Raleigh from guy in the local club (it was OK but nothing special, at least it got me started) I persuaded my Dad to 'lend' me the cash to buy a Viking Grand Tour from the local shop (Bill Hughes Cycles in Wrexham). It was in a lovely red flamboyant with black head tube and seat...

    Not a Holdsworth?

That looks a bit better. At least it has Nervex lugs and is a decent colour.

    Clive Stuart Cycles

Nice frame. Very like PG's with the chroming but with the fast back seat stays I'd say it was most likely to have been a 'southern' shop frame by Alec Bird. Date possibly late 60's/early 70's going by the lack of lever bosses and the cable guides along top tube and over the BBshell. What is...

Benelux mid-50's derailleur - not adding tension - any ideas?

The wheel is a lot further back in the dropout, making the effective chain length less. I had one a few years ago and winding the cage backwards increased the tension - but read the instructions as above to get the 'real deal'.

    Reynolds 753 tubeset

Proper 24 hour stuff not the rubbish 5 minute type that never goes off properly.

    Date of NYC Humber

Didn't know Raleigh used the Humber brand in the 60's, especially on a sports bike. Humber were, in my knowledge anyway, roadsters. Colour scheme reminds me of the Raleigh Blue Streak bike.

The newspaper boys race. I use the term 'boys' rather loosely looking at the winner!

Handlebar end gear levers nearly always had the cable running to the top of the bars near the stem. Mine did - and so did Rik van Looy's - so it must be right to do it this way 😇

    Graham Weigh

Say hello to Keith from me :) I think Graham also might have obtained frames from Patrick Schils who imported frames from the continent.

Can't believe I've missed this thread!! Just read right through, really interesting. I remember the red skinsuit photo on - I think - the cover of Cycling? Around the time he was racing there was a fashion for riding big gear fixed wheel in TT'ing - but not as Big as Derek normally. I didn't...

    can anyone identify this bike?

Looking at the seat cluster wrapover I would say it possibly came out of the Raleigh/Carlton/BSA/Sun stable. Or maybe Falcon?
