    Thanks for the reply, had a few hours on it since yesterday,, its a really comfortable ride, and the downshifters take me right back to my teenage years in the 1970's, I think your right regarding the fenders/ mud guards.

    Picking up, local (ish) a Dawes Galaxy this afternoon. In good working order, (apparently), a small 50cm frame which will suit my height 5' 3'' with a new set of tyres on it. £100 , so I am happy to pay that. Obviously I plan to add mud guards and a rear rack and will change the bar tape...

    Yeah, well spotted, a Night Burner , over recent years I have had a few Mk 1 and 2 Burners, but when your a a 60 year old bloke carrying a bit timber , riding them is not so easy, I was only riding them on retro bmx meets, (which I only got to two a year).

    Are retro MTBs a good place for a tight-budget beginner to start?

    Over the winter not so much but by the end of the summer my shins are covered in pedal rash, I had a Cinder Cone with none stock tenderiser pedals, I love the bike, it was two inches above what I normally rode, a lot of no feet down at traffic lights, those pedals always caught me every trip.
