I have a 1990 GT Team Avalanche that I've just built up. Everything is working great, except I'm struggling with the seat post, and I was wondering if I could get some tips. (measured with callipers) The seat post tube is: 26.9mm internal, 30mm external I have 2x seat posts: 1. 26.6mm seat...

    90s GT Avalanche Build questions

I've been working on building up this GT Team Avalanche - my first ever bike build. I'm getting to the final part of the build, and I have just a few final questions that I can't seem to find answers to (and some might be specific to these older frames) 1. (first photo) The rear derailleur arm...

Ways to fix chainline (GT Team Avalanche)

So would it be best to find a chainset with a narrower chainline? It seems all their single ring deore options have the same chainline: https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/deore-m4100/FC-M5100-1.html Are there suggestions for other ones to use for a 135 rear spacing?

Ways to fix chainline (GT Team Avalanche)

I'm building up a 1990s GT Avalanche. I've installed a MT510 hollowtech BB and then a MT510 12 speed chainset. However, now I've also installed the rear casette, I'm not getting a great chainline between the two - with the front chainring being basically in line with the last cog on the casette...

V brake vs Cantilever vs U brake? 90s GT

Ok, so it sounds like best idea would be to get cantilever front brake (with a dia compe U-brake on the rear) then they can both use the same types. I was looking at these, but they only work for the V brake type right...

V brake vs Cantilever vs U brake? 90s GT

One more question on this - do I need different brake levers for V brake and U brake? Or can I use V brake levers for both sets?

V brake vs Cantilever vs U brake? 90s GT

Could I run U brakes for both? Do people not prefer that to have both looking the same?

V brake vs Cantilever vs U brake? 90s GT

So is it a U brake on the back, but then a cantilever brake for the front?

V brake vs Cantilever vs U brake? 90s GT

Hi there, I'm building up a 1990 GT Team Avalanche - my first build - and wondering what brakes it can take? I'm struggling to understand if it can take all 3 of the V-brake / Cantilever / U-brake? From what I can see they all attach in the same way and function fairly similarly? Of these...

GT Team Avalanche BB width for 1x commuter

Hi there, I'm looking to build up a GT team avalanche (think its a 1990 model). One thing that I'm questioning a lot is what is the right size bottom bracket to get for it? I want to run it as 1x commuter, with either 8/9/10 speed. How would I go about working what BB to get? I'm concerned...

First ever bike build (GT avalanche) - questions

Hi there, I'm looking to purchase a GT avalanche frame, that I want to then build up into a commuter bike (1x 7-9) etc This would be my first bike build. I like to think of myself as a bit of a DIY-er, but as it will be my first I wanted to ask 2 main questions: 1. how much should I expect to...
