    1991 British Eagle K1

Took a bit longer than planned, waited for the warmer weather before painting and had delayed delivery on a couple of parts. Almost 28 years to the day since I bought it, my "new" British Eagle gravel bike Great experience from a learning perspective. Recycled as much as I could along the way.

Re: I checked my '92 catalogue and nothing similar, it looks like it's older than that?

Re: Slow going on the respray, I waited until we had some nice weather and with lockdown have some spare time. I'm hoping with all the extra time I got all the rust off. First and second coats of primer are done. Found the original brochure complete with prices. It has 531 tubing. Here’s...

I've it cleaned fairly well and it's ready for painting. I've waited as the advice I've got is it's better to paint in warmer weather. If I can't get the garage warmed up I'll wait until later in the spring. I'm in no rush so may as well do it right.

So, I've been stripping the paint off. Everything looks ok, but ... the frame has these marks. Any ideas? Some exotic rust?

    Bottom bracket, square taper upgrade?

Re: It's mad how complicated all this is! Thanks for the wisdom. I may be able to reuse the old 400LX cranks, and a 110bcd Race Face Narrow Wide Single Chainring with a new 73 x 122.5mm BB, I think that's as close to what I have, the BB feels a bit rough so it's as good to swap it out.

    Bottom bracket, square taper upgrade?

Just when I thought I'd it all figured out. Are the widths different depending on the cranksets? I.e. a triple is wider than a 1x Mine was a triple, and i'm planning on keeping it 1x for the rebuild. Looking online its a 68/122 and I should go for smaller for the 1x?

Definitely on the greasing etc, will get a tool this week for removing it and give it a polish and grease.

    Bottom bracket, square taper upgrade?

Re: Re: Brilliant reply! And considering it feels better at 27/28 years old than my 6 year old hardtails BB it's a valid claim

    Bottom bracket, square taper upgrade?

Re: Re: That's probably a good idea, it feels solid if a little rough from lack of use. A good dose of grease could do wonders.

Re: Is it possible to upgrade to newer tech though? Or are you stuck with square taper only?

    Bottom bracket, square taper upgrade?

Doing an upgrade of my 91 British Eagle. Doing a quick search here, are they standard? I'm seeing 68 x 110 mm BB-UN73. And how upgradable are they? Any advice great-fully accepted, thanks This is mine

So, few proper photos. Removed all the junk. Patches of surface rust but doesn't look like there's anything too bad. Weight is 14kg Measures up close enough to my road bike so I think I will convert to a 1x10 gravel bike

Re: Re: Thanks, I'll see how it goes. First will be taking a measuring tape to it and see how it measures up vs my road bike and modern mtb. There is a lot of potential for giving them a new lease of life which is great. It was quick enough for me back in the day so would be a nice runaround.

My 1991 British Eagle K1. Photo from the wrong side but anyways. 99% sure it's Reynolds 501, 21 speed Deore LX GCNs YouTube Tech channel have inspired me to refurbish it as a 1x gravel bike. It could give it a new lease of life.
