    Grisley Mega 20 rebuild project

Re: So it's now in pieces and had a quick wipe over. The paint work is pretty tatty in places but the frame is solid with no cracks. There is a bit of rubbing from the rear tyre and there some chain suck marks but should be good to start putting back together. I might consider a re spray one...

    Grisley Mega 20 rebuild project

So I managed to find this in a stack of frames at a local car boot sale. After handing over a crisp ten pound note I became the new owner and had to endure a barrage of "someone's nicked yer wheels mate!" gags until I finally made it home. It's a bit grubby but what's there seems mostly...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Re: Well it's all finished. Runs beautifully but there just isn't enough leg room for me sadly. Also as it's so original I'm a bit loathe to start swapping parts out. Sadly stuck it on the 'bay this afternoon. Having seen some of the amazing bikes on here I reckon I'll use the funds to build...

Re: Woohoo! Sorted! Spare brand new race found in LBS parts drawer for £2! Fits perfect and silky smooth. Phew! Just need to finish cleaning up the front mech, reassemble and fit the o rings when they get here. I reckon a Sunday outing could be on the cards! Thanks loads to everybody for...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Re: Cheers Guys, I think I might go for one of these whilst I look for a new crown race. It looks similar and is not too pricey: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00JGVT ... 1_2&sr=8-2 Is it part of a road group though? Thanks for the Ritchey assembly offer, I'll give you a shout if I decide...

Re: I never knew that! I remember rebuilding an old Peugeot road bike a few years ago and the crown race was loose on the steerer. Must have been the opposite problem you had. Everyday's a school day! The steerer on mine is 1 1/8". I think due to the 1/4" bearings it might have a decent stack...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Re: It's a 15.5"! I thought it looked bigger. They are wide profile brakes on the front so they must have continued the U brake solution in to the 1990 frames. Thanks for all the info so far. There are a few NOS DX headsets knocking about around the £50 mark but that's more than I paid for...

Re: Hmm, checked further in on the frame number situation. The number starts M91 which apparently should make it a 91 frame? I think? If anybody knows different that would be great. Surely this would mean it would have to have the darker colour scheme and definitely wouldn't have the u brake...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Re: Thanks for the info, I will see if I can track some down CLR or equivalent. It sounds like good stuff! I have used a bit of tin foil so far and they have come up ok, I also had a few spare bolts in my spares box. I have swapped the rear mech pulley bolts for some stainless ones off a...

Re: Right then, Stripped down the front end and found out why the bearings sounded so nasty - a cracked crown race! The rest of the DX headset, including bearings, looks to be in good condition so hopefully I can source a new part to suit. I forgot how huge the bearings are! The steerer tube...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Re: Brilliant, cheers on the o rings. Weather permitting I'm going to make a start on stripping down today. I'm eager to try and get the shifters running smoothly. I had a quick polish of the front wheel and it's come up lovely. Hopefully the rest will follow suit! I'll post some more pics...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Re: Hi, Thanks for the reply. When I got it it had panniers and mudguards on so I reckons it's only had occasional commuter use over the past 24 years! I quite like the u brake, it works a treat, although I think it has been snapped/ modified at some point. The bearings are really dry so...

    Marin Pine Mountain 1990(?)

Hi, I am new to the forum but have often browsed the pages and found an amazing amount of knowledge and information to be had. I would ask then that somebody may be kind enough to share their wisdom as to why my, what I believe to be a 1990, Marin Pine Mountain has a U brake on the rear seat...
