1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Re: Re: Ooo yeah, if you have one to complete the set of 4 that'd be great. Let me know if you find it. Bit more progress today......but not a huge amount. Bought some grey cable outers - and cut to length. Started to clean up and plate some of the small fittings. Need to buy some silver...

So - 26 x 1 1/4 (32-597). Turns out I have a huge choice of either Schwalbe HS130 (same as the rear tyre currently on the bike) or Kendas. I'll be buying one Schwalbe then! https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tyres/schwa ... nch-32597/

Not a clue as yet - haven't really thought that far ahead. They're 26" wheels so I'm assuming they will be a fairly common size. Will check the size later and have a browse on't internet later.

1952 Claud Butler Massed Start #522513 (skip find)

Peachy - apologies for the old post revival but it came up in a search result- did you ever have a play with the Beugler? Missed a couple reasonably priced Beuglers recently on eBay but I'm desperate to get my hands on one and try out striping. Did you have any joy with it?

Re: Re: Nope - the new pads pushed in as if they were designed to fit. They are just marginally short for the holder... I haven't (can't) set them up yet and test them but it looks like they should be OK. Will obviously report back as and when I have a new cable made up and and get a...

Bob Jackson to close after all

Re: Bob Jackson possibly closing down? I hope not... Bob Jackson now no longer closing on the 18th according to their website.......! http://www.bobjacksoncycles.co.uk/

No teaching of egg sucking there Peachy - top tips - in fact its conformation of what I had in mind but wasn't sure whether it was a suitable way around the problem of part nickel plated/part corroded frame. I'm impressed at how smooth it is possible to make the corroded parts - the main lower...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

I read a comment on classiclightweights that Resilion cantilevers had the same profile as more modern v-brake inserts......so I bought some. They fit ok - are slightly shorter and have less "meat" on them than the originals but are new and not hard and brittle like the fibrax inserts that...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Oooo......good link, thanks for that. After a measure up it turns out the 2 cables from the splitter are a smaller dia to the main cable into it.....but only by a small amount which seems odd - not sure why it was done like that. Looks like I should be able to order appropriate cabling from...

1950 Claud Butler Avant Coureur - a cloak of many colours

Whilst I probably shouldn't delve back into a project that I've shelved for a while the temptation to do some more electroplating is too much to bear. Knowing that I had a Gnutti headset cleaned up in almost bare steel meant that a quick dig in the shed would give me an ideal candidate for a...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Surprised at how many bits that cable broke down into. Just need to try and find some suitable replacement and then have a crack at silver soldering! Worked out quite well - and judging by the very small bits of the assemblies that have already started to go ginger (roots of the threads on...

    '81 Claud Butler Colstar Yumeya/DuraAce #035210 FINISHED p16

Re: 1981 Claud Butler Colstar - DuraAce #035210 Looking good Chris. I just dropped them an email and it's £80+vat+post for my corroded forks on my Gran Sport. Nice slightly-more-than-halfway house price between my local £35 quote and Ashford chroming at £175 for a job that looks great...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Finished cleaning and plating the front brakes. 2 down.....2 to go. Started making a jig for the front cable. Mainly to compress the spring loaded sections so I can get a bit of slack in the cable. Because these are quite a complicated arrangment and also set lengths the only way to...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Re: Re: Yeah nice to get them that clean - considering how bad they looked. You had any luck finding a set for the Maclean's? I'm not sure what is optimum to be honest - I had a 1.1l bottle of Vinegar and added 2x tablespoons of salt to increase the conductivity. Not very scientific and...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Been playing with Nickel plating recently.....seen a few vids online suggesting that home-brew plating is actually a viable process that can yield some good results. The most annoying thing for me when doing a resto is all those little fixings or brackets or plates that once cleaned up are then...

Oooo blimey.....there's a challenge! Not sure it could be rideable in 2 and a bit weeks - it certainly won't be painted and fully finished!! I have managed to cobble together all the bits I need for it - including a sturmey archer long arm trigger shifter.......making up the new brake cables...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Re: Re: I was a little worried that the corrosion was severe enough to compromise the function/strength of the parts.....and also wanted the engraved lettering to have survived too. They've been painted silver at some point in the past which I think has helped to preserve them. Super happy...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

So the donor tandem is stripped and has offered up the all important brakes/levers and frame clips......a saddle, Bluemels Lightweight mudguards and a set of pedals (3 of which at least match). 3x Phillips Apollo? and a Brampton racing pedal. Tried cleaning up a cantilever...

    Maclean's Featherweight - Mid 40s

Lovely project - reckon a nicely restored set of Resilion brakes will look great on this when you find a set. Whats the plan for the other kit? What cranks/saddle/pedals/wheels etc?
