    Whisky flavoured bikes

£5000 would buy a good few more ordinary bikes too! Then again, these are really usable works of art as much as bikes. In any case, I have a bottle of Glenmorangie in the kitchen that will last me until the end of time at the current rate of consumption - any good ideas for practical uses I...

Re: Steering problems on Pompino When I was a youngster I had an old Land Rover with this same problem... nowadays I'd be far too worried about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere to risk anything like that on four wheels! Just starting to get back into this mindset now that I have a...

    Cannondale F800 R.I.P.

Re: Wow, 10%... you could probably negotiate that yourself anyway. Your new frame looks in great nick though, does it "feel" like the same bike (assuming you swapped all the other bits over?) or like a new one? I must admit reading your story made me look over my own 15 year old eBay purchase...

    Cannondale F800 R.I.P.

So what happened - did you get a new frame out of Cannondale, or a replacement from someone else? I nearly bought a F700 in the early 2000s, I'm kind of glad I didn't now - instead I spent the money on a guitar that's now worth more than I paid for it and and the Kona I was going to replace...

    Whisky flavoured bikes

I read about these yesterday and happened to bump into them today... http://road.cc/content/news/229206-reno ... isky-casks Actually they're very attractive "in the flesh" and also pretty light - they really have made a nice job of making the most of the wood grain and produced a nicely...

Pedestrian dies after Oxford Street cyclist crash

Re: I find it interesting that it seems women are much more likely than either men or children to be the cause of these incidents - particularly as a middle aged female pedestrian collided with me a few years ago when I regularly commuted through the city. It was 100% her fault - the "red man"...

    get yer roadie on!

Re: Re: Ha ha, never seen that one before - I know two of the "mad hatters" (about 2 mins in) which is a fair description I think! Both very nicely produced films.

Re: Took most of the afternoon off to go for my first proper ride on my "new" bike (it's pretty modern for me, only 15 years old - I'm going straight from cantis to hydraulic discs which is a very pleasant upgrade!) Conversely I moved to SPDs 24 years ago and so going back to clips and straps...

You know you're getting old when..............

My first car was (and is) nearly a decade older than me and was decidedly retro even when it was new! (Land Rover SIIA)

    Lycra

Re: I'm not really bothered with what other people think of me nearly so much as being bothered about my own comfort. If I'm going out for a cycle I want to be comfortable and for that reason I'll wear suitable cycling clothes - I'm not in the least interested in what some Continental might...

1994 Kona Fire Mountain restoration project.

Re: Great job, and those Maguras will fix the only major shortcoming of these bikes. Sadly mine is about to be retired after 22 years of use and abuse, as I'm awaiting delivery of a much more modern Rocky Mountain - it's only 15 years old! Maybe I'll be inspired to do something similar to...

Help me decide - Bike or Drill

Splash out a whole tenner or so on a decent brace, then spend the rest of the money on a bike. Best of both worlds - plus you'll get a bit of exercise whether drilling or cycling!

    Modern Technology

Re: Re: I can't exactly recommend it as it's not arrived yet (should be here today if the tracking info is correct), but the company is Ottoni Fabbrica and they sell through Amazon or their own website. You're right that society has just "accepted it" - I'm happy for people who really,really...

Re: Re: Yeah, I bought the (real) Dualit toaster because the parts are readily available and also because it's made in the UK. This doesn't apply to their plastic Chinese rubbish "lookalike" toasters or their kettles as far as I know; my parents have a Dualit kettle and it's pretty rubbish in...

    Modern Technology

Re: I hate the whole "disposable appliance" mentality. I have no regrets having paid £98 for a stainless steel, well engineered and repairable Dualit toaster... even if it died completely tomorrow and I had to chuck it it'll only have cost me £7.54 per year! I had a terrible time trying to...

    shed cladding advice please.

Re: Looking really good... I found a Swanson speed square brilliant for getting the roof right - once you figure out how to use it and decide on a roof pitch it's really easy to mark out the bird's mouth and the angles for either end. Are you going to use felt on the roof? It doesn't survive...

Looks like a good start.. Is that a first attempt rafter I see lurking behind? This was yet another area where I changed my mind about what to do the night before I actually did the job! I went for a ridge beam design to make it strong whilst keeping plenty of clear interior height.

Re: Nice pics Jon, you picked a good day for that job! I finally got out for a couple of hours on the road bike this afternoon, pretty breezy but lovely and bright and fragrant. A bit too breezy maybe, it seems I got sunburned without feeling it!

    shed cladding advice please.

I found that a relatively time consuming but very satisfying part of the build. I didn't use any fancy hardwoods, just CLS mostly... the beaded boards in the lower panel of the door were made from leftover larch cladding offcuts but the rest of the door was all CLS. I was a bit worried about...

    shed cladding advice please.

Thanks! It is very cosy, once the weather warmed up I was glad I made the windows opening (the skylight opens too though I didn't make that... it was about the only major component that I bought, the rest was nearly all done the masochist hand-tool only way!)
