I had an 855 frame this year with the same problem. No signs of serious battle damage. I suspect that it may have always been wonky.

Thanks for that Pete! I knew they weren't hope, I have some hope skewers and they're much nicer than this tat. Funny though, these are quite serviceable, light and strong while the newer Taiwanese versions like the ones tend fall apart. ahhh progress!

Any idea on the manufacturer? Just curious, they turned up on a hope wheelset on fleebay last year.
