I forgot to say decals are from Gil M. Lovely job he did too. They are period correct style but with the letter colour toned down a bit to show off the paint work.
Thanks. Yes it will have cantis. I went with vees on my p7 partly for convenience and because later p7s would have had vees anyway. This frame pre dates vees by several years and although the build is not retro perfect it would be a step too far not to try cantis out on it.
So build parts...
Fitting the cassette, and adding the back wheel. The wheel is a modern bargainous one from merlin with Deore hub and mavic rim. The rim actually matches the front reasonably well in appearance (and the front is an older item with stx rc hub and mavic 237 rim).
You might not like the part that is about to go on this......but I said it wasn't going to be retro perfect.
I would have preferred a 5-bolt crank, but this build is going to be a bit of a mix of bits really. Its going to be like a 92/93 bike that has been kept running by upgrading bits over...
I acquired a later 1" f7 fork for this, as I wasn't planning on making this absolutely retro perefect. Here's the frame and fork newly painted and with aheadset and stem fitted.
So, thought I'd start a build thread for this now the frame is painted. This is hopefully going to be a bike for my wife. The p7 I built was too big and has become my winter bike, so in come this 17" clockwork.
Frame was a bit scratched and had some rust patches. I cleaned it up and treated the...
I'm sure I recall reading somewhere that pre-90/91 clockworks had codes where the first digit was not the year. The codes after 90/91 changed I believe. So a03 codes could have been present on both pre-90/91 frame and on 93 built frames (for example). This looks like a fairly early frame to me...
He is referring to the levers being the wrong way round...not replacing them. You have the right and left swapped, so that the mounting bolts are wrong way up. The bolts should be on the underside. That's how they were designed, and it also means any water/damp should drop out of the bolt heads...
Re: Cranks and chain slip when applying torque pedalling har
Not going to believe this, but now I have the exact same problem! I have a brand new SRAM 9-speed chain, one year old SRAM cassette which I feel is unlikely to be worn, brand new middle chainring and cassette is running on a 1 year...
Good point ....1988 ridgebacks would almost certainly have had u-brakes. Not sure about '89 but its not from that year as the decals are not like the ones I remember most. Also pretty sure the stems would have been longer in 89 and 90. You might have it with your original guess of 87.
Looks like it could be pre 1990 possibly, but not much. Absence of swan neck stem suggests late 80s rather than mid. Components also suggest earlier than 90. Looks like a sakae crank fitted and low end shimano derailleurs - possibly exage mountain. No idea what the brakes are though.
