    1976 Carlton Corsa Resto-Mod

To ensure that I was able to use this bike more often I fitted some new bars, brakes and grips. I had to grind down some of the parts as they didn't fit in with the rest of the bare/brushed steel look. Its become my most often used bike since the change and I'm really happy with how it...

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Is the normal trigger shifter much more reliable than the twist grip? If so, I may get one.

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

After a few mile test ride I definitely now have three gears. I've noticed that I can get it working on a stand, but then under load on the road it can be a little unpredictable and unsafe, switching out of gear unexpectedly. I need to make some adjustments to solve the following: - The low...

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Keith, you are the SA saviour. I have all three gears, all nicely adjusted. I can now strip, reassemble and adjust an SA hub in minutes all because I've now done it so many times trying to get this bike right. No experience of this type of setup before. What was wrong? I foolishly put the...

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

I can remove the whole internal assembly, but the hub shell end on the left cannot be removed, its a one piece shell.

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Which ones are the low gear pawls? The ones nearest the planet cage or the ones at the other end (left side)¿

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Readjusted it from scratch. I have high and middle gear. When I change to low (most chain pulled out) I just get freewheeling.

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

All the pawl springs are new. The ones near the planets spring back quickly, the others at the end (left) spring back slower due to oil resistance. These also have a chamfer on the top surface, that I think are facing the right way.

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Here's what I find: Gear cable removed to rule out shifter or cable problems. Pedal the bike and pull chain out as far as it goes. The pedals freewheel. Let it go in by half a chain link and it finds a gear and turns the wheel Then let the chain in by a link length and it freewheels again...

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Stripped and checked everything again and I can still only get two gears. If I can be confident that there's no slippage when riding then I'll have to leave this project as it is. It's still a vast improvement on when I bought it for 44 quid and is another interesting ride.

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

I've rebuilt the whole hub again and can still only find 2 gears. I suspect that the indicator spindle is either not coming out of the end of the axle as far as it should or not retracting back in far enough. It feels like there's another gear to go beyond what I can find now. How do I...

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

The gears were completely out of adjustment when I got it. The bike had not been used for at least a few years. I used this guide and took note of all the part positions when dismantling so I could put it back together again. http://bicyclehub.co.uk/index.php?optio ... Itemid=121

Sturmey Archer AW 3SP Hub - Only Two Gears

Firstly, I'm not sure if this post is in the right place. I've stripped down and fully cleaned a Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hub (1990). Its in a good condition, nothing looks 'worn'. I've replaced the pawl springs and the bearings. I've greased the bearings and re-oiled the lot. The shifter...

    1976 Carlton Corsa Resto-Mod

Too many logos on everything in cycling! I bought a set of stickers from eBay for about £7. I've got another 3 small Carlton badges and a larger badge sticker left. I think I'm going to leave it as it is

eBay, very cheap So cheap that I bought three colours, just to see which one looked the best. I chose the bronze-ish braided cable style.

In terms of bike maintenance, having never done anything more than changing an innertube when I was 14, so I decided to get an old road bike and do it up in a style I had in my head. This was a clean brushed steel finish (no paint), complete with whatever age related marks it had, brown saddle...
