SCOTLAND MacRetro Meet Jan 24th Dunkeld

Sorry guys, I'll not make this. I have to be in Aberdeen for 2pm that day. Looking forward to the next one though!

Inform other members of nice places to ride near you

Mazdaman, I've started to do the sort of thing you are refering to by logging routes cycled with a GPS (I know it is hardly retro!) and building a dynamic map using the Ordnance Survey's application developerment kit. Examples - only for the NE of Scotland so far include...

    base layers

IMO Aldi stuff can vary a bit. All of the workshop tools I've bought (small compressor for example) have been excellent; good value, good spec. I've got some of the Crane Bike clothing and the long trousers are superb (went out for a wee hurly earlier on in them). The bib shorts however are...

SCOTLAND MacRetro Meet Jan 24th Dunkeld

Nothing :) Served me well for more than 20 years of biking and climbing. Got given the GPS (most basic Garmin thing) last year and have used it to record routes for posting to the web. There is no way I would rely upon it for directions on the hill - if it loses the signal, runs out of...

SCOTLAND MacRetro Meet Jan 24th Dunkeld

Thanks. I've only just begun to play with the Ordnance Survey OpenLayers API and the short route was the only one I could find a .gpx file for on the net. I've not ridden it myself but some kind soul had put the .gpx file on a website I stumbled upon. If you or "the ken" had GPS files for...

Trying out polishing a crank set.

I'm about to try this on my 20yo cranks. What technique did you use? If I could get mine as shiny as those I'd be very happy.

SCOTLAND MacRetro Meet Jan 24th Dunkeld

I've put together a map of one of the possible routes at Dunkeld. As it builds from a hefty file of GPS data it takes a moment or two to load. Once loaded you can drag the map around and scroll in / out with the slider top left. Dunkeld map P.S. Gazz, agree with you on Port Glasgow -...

    Tyre pressures??

Have always used 45psi off road with every tyre I've had - Ritchey Quad, Panaracer Smoke / Dart, Michelin Death Trap (that wasn't its name but it should have been). Most riding is / has been on harder ground with a limited amount of thick mud. For the road, I use 55 in my semi slicks.

    Scottish Retro Bikers

Erm, best I've ever done it is around 4 hours. I can do Gretna in less!! Dunkeld sounds good, Loch Ordie especially if it is not too icy.

    Scottish Retro Bikers

Me as well. Never raced (though I am doing the Bennachie Mountain Duathlon on Feb 22nd if that counts). More into epic rides in the hills and using the bike to shorten walk-ins to the big crags. Overbury's Pioneer is in bits ahead of a full refurb so will be riding <hangs head in shame>...

    Shifting Preference

Thumbies for me. Never ridden a MTB in anger without them. Tried other folks bikes in the past with other controls and found them alien. That is going to have to change as I've just bought a new bike which has STI shifters. My quick practice up and down the ice covered road last night...

biopace - who's still got it!

That possibly explains a lot :) Maybe that's why I'm such a carp runner compared to cyclist. I need oval running shoes instead

biopace - who's still got it!

Yes, still got it on my Pioneer. It will be staying that way following the renovation as that is how it came originally. I know some people have a real problem with it (or maybe just Shimano in general) but I've ridden with it for so long, that now, round rings feel odd to me :?

Can anyone recommend a bike shop in Aberdeen

Yes, there is Alpine Bikes, also Edinburgh Bicycle on George Street (done some jobs for me recently at a reasonable price). Not used them myself but a friend swears by Foundry Bikes on Jopps Lane (between George Street and Aberdeen College).

i made myself a DIY repair 'stand'

So I'm not the only one then :) I did once work out a way to clamp the bike upside down in a Workmate but tried it recently and couldn't get it to sit right.

    Front mech shims?

Shims Geetee, Thanks for asking this, I was about to post the same thing. I've got a 31.8 which I would like to shim down to 28.6. Any idea where you can get these from folks?

    cone spanners

Can't comment on size (though the cone spanners I have are stepped so do 15 / 17mm at one end and something else at the other - which means they should most common sizes). I find getting the right bearing load is easier with the wheel on the bike and the quick release done up (tried it off...

anyone got a pic of a overburys pioneer?

Gigantic I reckon. My 16.5 inch frame has the top tube and down tube with less than an inch between them where they fix to the the head tube. I reckon it is going to be at least a 20 inch frame. Given that the bottom bracket is higher than most bikes, I would need a step ladder to even get on...
