Went up the same hill this alvo and had to capitulate, knees on the point of collapse! :( 44x16 is just a gear too far. Had been on 44x17 (69.9inches) previously but the 17t cog was chewed into an interesting shape by a shabby chain. Maybes source a 43t chain ring for a ratio in between.

Today I... swapped the cog on the fixie. Now sporting a high geared 44x16 (74.25" gear ratio). Toiled going up the cycle path round the base of Arthur's seat (Holyrood to Newington).

Successful weekend, built my bike cover (below, cheers for B&Q corrugated plastic tip). And just scored a proper chain tensioner on fleabay for the GT Safety Bicycle.
