Re: When the bushings wear out and get sloppy, that's exactly what I will do.

Came up with a solution. It involves my lathe, 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, a master cylinder hone and LEE case resizing lube. The rear suspension assembly will slowly fall under it's own weight, without the rear wheel attached, and has no slop. No "feel" involved.

Thinking about it some more............My theory is that the plastic bushings shrink over time (years) and get tighter around the anodized spacers inside. Once this happens, they get tight and the only way to loosen them up is by "feel". Meaning, the anodized spacers no longer rotate inside...

Would anyone that understands the design philosophy behind the rear end assembly care to chime in?

Not to be argumentative but, when you get bearings in your next one, are you also going to "tighten until it feels ok"? I do not believe you understand the design principles at work here. What you are describing, "tighten until it feels ok" would be if the rear assembly rotated around the...

What do you mean "by feel"? By design, there shouldn't be any "feel" to tightening the bolts up in regards to rear assembly movement. The bolts tighten down to the spacers inside the bushings in which they rotate.

Rear suspension linkage....how free/tight Just wondering how tight/loose the rear bushings should be. A couple months ago, I changed out the original shock for a Fox FloatRL on my '99 FSR and I noticed the weight of the whole rear assembly wasn't enough to get the linkage to move. I could...

Re: Not sure how much anodizing would cost but I would bet it's more than powder coating. If you do the powder coat, do all the threaded holes and mating surfaces like you mentioned as well as things like the lugs that the cable outer housing go in (The powder will fill them), the outer part...

Re: Personally, I wouldn't have my frame powder coated. It adds weight as well as thickness where it doesn't need to be, such as inside threads, bearing/bushing press in surfaces, dropouts, etc. I have seen, over a few decades, to many people do it to motorcycle frames only to hate it...

No problem there. I have plenty of 6061 aluminum and a lathe. Curious......What does FSR stand for? As far as what Specialized says it stands for. I'm sure all kinds of things can, and have been, made up.

Just picked up a FOX Float RL off of Pinkbike. Should get it in a few days. Should be a good improvement over the leaking stock Rockshox Deluxe. Now to get a pump.

Thanks guys. Did a quick look on eBay for "Mountain speed" and nothing. They do have a website but, it is virtually dead. Looks like I may be conning some milling machine time from a friend of mine that has one. Besides multiple shock mounting points, any other ideas to incorporate? If I do...

Being a noob, not sure if these people are commonly known in the MTB community but I have used them for over 20 years for other apps. http://www.bocabearings.com/ Edit......Nevermind. I just saw their ad banner at the top of the page.

Right now, all the rear pivots points are good and tight on mine. This is part of the reason I bought it. This winter sometime, I want to tear it down completely and go through it all. This may include bearings. Just depends on what condition I find things in there. If it's still tight as...

I was never really worried about replacing bushings or converting to bearings. I can machine pretty much whatever I may need in that area. A rear linkage on the other hand is a bit more difficult. My milling abilities are limited in the equipment I have. It's a lathe with a milling...
