    Alves

Its sad to say but I think Alves Framesets might be finished. Charlie was never a prolific builder but he did good work. Sad to see yet another british builder turn his torch off again. Perhaps we are all to blame for not supporting our home bred innovators and builders more often. I...

    Iceland

Didn't manage to go due to a nasty bout of illness which has kept me off the bike I built for the occasion. Slowly finding energy to get going again although Iceland is probably off the list for a few years.... I'm more a camel trail man now trying to keep up with the kids

Retro set up - if u rode mtbs in the early 90's, comment!

I'm odd! I'm 6'1" with a 36" inside leg and gibbon length arms. I have been told that my limb length should be fitted to a 6'7"+ bloke. Always have had fitting problems when it came to having bikes. Ended up going custom but remember my fist MTB a 18" Dale series 3 with an incredibly long...

    IDIOT allen key size

3.5mm isn't an idiot size! It's ideal if you want to design something with a size somewhere between 3 and 4mm......

    To respray or not?

He's probably going to use a rather poisonous chemical called alchrome 1200 which converts the surface of the material. Basically its anodic chromate solution conversion so thats good news. I would suggest a vapour wash which is a very fine and gentle form of sand blasting around the coroded...

    To respray or not?

I would like to thik that the frame will be fine. Just depends on the wall thickness and factor off safety incorporated into the design. The white salts are the easy bit to get rid off. Make sure you polish out all the pitting as well otherwise even after a nice spray job you'll be doing it...

    To respray or not?

If it is 6061 the material problems are overcome. However fatigue cracking and the removal of the corrosion on a stressed area of the frame is still a problem. Remember they make the frames light and not to, I hate to say it, last. If you want it to last then a nice predictable material like...

    To respray or not?

I believe Kliens are 7000 series alloys. As a result they have an alloying agent of copper rather than zinc found in 6000 series. This is all very well until around ten years later where integranular corrosion takes place (electrolytic oxidation within the grain structure of the material)...

    Iceland

Anyone out there got experience of the Sprengisandur. I like the look of the fact that there is nothing there but are there any better coast to coast routes in Iceland before I commit myself?

    My New "retro"

I'm not 7 foot tall but I am a little different in my diamensions (Gibbon comes to mind), hence the different looking frame. I've found some olives so that I can trim the front brake hose now........ thankfully. The frame is Reynolds 725, plenty stiff and light with that forgiving steel feel...

    My New "retro"

Its a new frame as are all the components except the pedals and tyres but I believe its "soul" is retro. I've designed the geometry for multiple uses but she remains quick with neutral handling. What do you guys and girls think? Just waiting to persuade myself to buy some matching honey...

    Nipples

Dont use alminium nipples. Titanium even with ti prep will gall against any material it is in cintact with especially under any type of tension so adjustment will become very difficult. If you really need to use aluminium rather than brass self lubricating and meaninglessly heavier nipples use...

    grafton help please

Those dont look like graftons to me.especially the skewers Are they perhaps cheapy tektro copies or has the standard of Grafton machined parts dissapearedwith age. I had some similar once and butchered them to keep some Campag brakes going. Try 987 with Shimano SLR levers. Toptastic and the...

    What is 'retro'?

Things did go all sour when the accountants rode in dicovered a sport ripe to profit from. It's not just the building but marketability of the new that matters. Pah......... Getting my new bike this weekend. My first since 1992. I'm lucky enough to be able to spend near enough what I like...

    Frame buying/making advice.

29er Will receive a custom, self designed, frame next week that has been fabricated to fulfill all the needs you mentioned (except the 29 inch wheels due to expedition needs). Solitude cycles are actually built by Lee Cooper Cycles in Coventry. Lee knows his stuff but is not my preference for...
