State of the industry: a running thread

I really like the Kona Unit, but £1400 for a rigid bike, with Deore and average steel frame is a bit of a joke

Why do you collect retro bikes?

I don't collect (bikes or anything else). However, I have a preference towards retro bikes because: -when I got my first adult sized bike it was the early 90s, so I'm biased -I like bikes that are easy and cheap to maintain, with rigid forks, and with standards that don't get obsolete in 6...

Rockhopper or Palisades Trail for touring ?

If the Rockhopper is already built, I would already use it and sell the Marin. You are trying to make your life easier by selling the other bikes, and this is the path of less resistance. If, however, after a couple of weeks you are not 100% convinced on the Rockhopper, then yes, give the Marin...

    The big sales slowdown

Talking about my local market (Germany), the "analog" bike market is slowly dying, as everyone is now crazy with ebikes (folding, MTB, cargo,... al kinds are booming). Basically only the super cheap or collectible sell. The 200€ to €1000 market does not move. I only sell in my local classifieds...

State of the industry: a running thread

For the record, it's not that they "suddenly" found a pile of debt. They had loans, but also the promise from the parent company of a 150m credit line. So the accounts were "matched". The parent company backtracked in the last minute and then the black hole was opened...

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

And now that we are here, this bike below was in my local classifieds as "folding cargo bike". Forgot the asking price...

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

Tapping on this pool of folding bike nerds... On top of my Dahon Cadenza that I posted about 20 pages ago, now my wife also wants a folder. The in-laws have 2, very similar to the one on the picture below (from Google). They are 20", with a Duomatic hub (2 speed, you change gears by backpedaling...

State of the industry: a running thread

This is also big news in Germany as Signa Sports also owns other bike shops there like Fahrrad.de, Bikester, Probikeshop, Brügelmann... plus other non-cycling sites like Campz or Tennis Point. Less competition is always bad, but at least in the German market there are plenty of other choices...

    Good Modern STEEL MTB Bikes

I've never tried any of them but in my wish list are the Kona Unit and Breezer Thunder, both rigid bikes. A bit expensive for what they offer though. I also like the Ritchey Ascent, not cheap either but at least with a much better resale value...

Show us your 700C ATB / MTB / Hybrid

I just got lucky with this one. The guy did not mention brand or model in his add, for him it was just an old hybrid. People have already found out the old Multitracks have nice steel and take 42mm tires so everyone is doing gravel conversions. Specialized Crossroads also fetch crazy prices...

It's never a race to see who gets it cheaper. But a low price definitely helps to leave the bike parked in the station every morning without too much thought... They will still have to go through my Abus Granit-X lock though, worth 10 times the price of the bike! :) My sister has exactly that...

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

This is the one: https://www.tubus.com/en/products/rear-carriers/tubus-product/cosmo In case you don't know the brand, Tubus is quite popular among cycletourers as it's one of very few manufacturers making the racks in steel, so they are very sturdy and with a good warranty. They are also...

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

Finally got around to taking a picture of my Dahon Cadenza built up. Now with a Tubus rear rack... Sorry for the blurry pictures but I was running out of daylight!

A 1997 Trek Multitrack 730, called Trekking because it was the European version with useful commuter stuff like mudguards or lights. All original except for the tires, as far as I know. Bought it 2 months ago from a guy that was selling it, without tires and tubes, as a "parts donor" so I...

    Work bikes

This is my latest commuter bike. 1997 Trek 730, the "Trekking" version (Trek would make a special Multitrack version for Europe with useful stuff like mudguards, dynamo lights, kickstand, etc. and call it Trekking instead, at least on the 750 and 730 models. No sign of them in the catalogues...

Post your retro steel adventure touring mtb pixs

I forgot you were looking for tips to set up your bike for a long tour in Asia, so here is my personal experience. First, decide if you will leave the bike behind at the end of the trip or rather keep it, as that will impact what kind of upgrades you will make. Then, in this order: 1.- Ride...

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

I only bought it a month ago, so I'm still getting used to it. Bike is very easy to fold, the only issue is that you need a 6 hex key to fold it (or build it back), plus another 5 hex if you want to remove the handlebar to put it parallel to the frame. The folding mechanism, I think it's called...

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

I recently bought a Dahon Cadenza 8. I believe a 2008 model. I like it because it has 26" wheels and does not look or feel like a folder when built up. Of course it does not fold very compact but enough to travel for free in German trains, which was the idea. I believe Dahon has now released a...
