1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

Well, i welded a 2.5mm drill bit to the end of a brake cable today and tried to drill it out. No luck. Couldnt get enough force on the cable to really get anywhere. Whatever is in there is hard. I think the tube had a liner which has melted from the powdercoating. Next step - going to heat...

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

Have done the WD40 and tried to clear with some 1.6mm filler rod. It is rock solid and didnt budge at all in there and the other end is totally blocked. Was talking to a mate who is a gun at welding, he said I can definitely weld a 2mm drill bit (cut down to about 10mm overall length) to the end...

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

Well, Ozpete was kind enough to send me the missing brake components! That sorted that out, but I have hit another big road block. Hoping someone here can share a trick/tip to get this sorted but im expecting the worst. The rear brake runs inside the top tube and something is blocking the...

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

I used a mixture of wire wheel, sandpaper, paint stripper and elbow grease. Probably took 10hrs in total. Making some headway although I'm slightly stumped with brake pads. Front brakes are original canti and the rear will remain U brake. Planning to use these on the fronts (KOOLSTOP...

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

Unfortunately I need to have 30 posts before I can send private messages - might be a while. Maybe you can send me one with your email and I can contact you directly? Is this not the best way to do things with bikes? I figured if i wanted a really good finish on the paint, bare metal was the...

Extremely nice build. Well done. Are the headset and seatpost clamp NOS? What pedals are you using in the last pictures?

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

This is great to hear. I really want to keep the bike as original as possible. How do I get in touch with you? I made some progress. Finished prepping it for powdercoating - I'm usually pretty good about buying parts but being new to bikes and really having no idea what the **** im...

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

I've done some measuring, miles away from getting a 2.4 to fit. I think 2.1 is right on the limit. I will keep my eyes peeled for a second hand Shimano U brake locally. In my research last night I cam across Spray.Bike. Is this stuff any different to normal acrylic in a can?

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

No worries. Appreciate the input! As for brakes - are the Dia-Compe AD990 any good/would they fit the rear of my GT and also allow me to run a 26x2.4 tyre? Having trouble finding a lot of options for new rear U brakes.

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

Thanks! Unfortunately the other side of the bike is a lot worse for wear. Almost all the paint is missing off the bar that's next to the chain, lots and lots of scratches. It doesn't seem to have had an easy life. Found a couple schematics of the rear U brake, I'm missing a lot of the dust...

1992 GT - First restoration and a lot of missing parts

Hi guys, Long time lurker, decided it was time to join. Moved to New Orleans last year and it was the first time living in a city that was more or less totally flat. This made me keen to start riding again (hadn't since my youth) and then the desire for a retro mtb came about when I saw...
