    Rigid Stumpjumper

I think I bought my rigid Stumpy about 1997/98. It's steel called Nitanium. There are some scrapes where the chain came off but it hasn't rusted. Does this type of steel not rust?

Have you had a good look in your barn?

Here's a rare space frame, about 30 years old, in better condition but far from concourse. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Moulton-AM-Ju ... true&rt=nc

"But the underlying frame is essentially the same...." True, just the same but slightly modified.

Have you had a good look in your barn?

Not many were built although there are rarer Moultons. Most of the vintage F frame Moultons which were built in the 'sixties and early 'seventies could be described as utility bikes with 3 or 4 speed SA hubs or the Fichel and Sachs Duomatic Torpedo hub. These bikes ride nicely especially if...

Have you had a good look in your barn?

When you ride a Moulton Speedsix the hills become flat, the wind is always behind you, the components never wear out because they are made from Durilium, the gears change automatically by thought control, and you are irresistible to anyone to whom you wish to be irresistible. In fact because...

I agree: a good retro mountain bike is hard to beat for versatility. I ride my Stumpy in all weathers, on road, lanes and rough tracks and with semi-slick tyres I can keep up with my cycling groups who ride a mixture of road, touring and hybrid bikes. Recently I had a complete new drive put on...

I agree but of all my bikes the modern Moultons are the most responsive and exciting to ride. They seem to accelerate more quickly and directly - a bit like a BMX. They simply ride differently and more smoothly but not everyone takes to them. Well worth a try if you get the opportunity. Most...

Apparently there's no overall optimum size of wheel although HPV (human powered vehicle) records are held by machines with small wheels. Alex Moulton proved mathematically (certainly to himself) that the "optimum" size of wheel was 17 inches. What is interesting about Moultons is that Alex...

The ride quality is excellent and direct. The front and rear suspension gives a very smooth and sophisticated ride. My favourite is the TSR 27 with DualDrive which brings a smile to my face every time I get on it. They are also fun to ride; with good acceleration and maneuverability. They...

    Boutique Retro Mountain bikes

What makes of bike do members think can be realistically described as "boutique" retro mountain bike brands?

This one also possibly looks more modern than an Orange 5. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOULTON-039-S ... true&rt=nc

Yes, but 6 dots in a row is a much higher price that 6 individual dots added together. The bike above is the TSR 2 which retails at 1 Moulton dot. But 6 of them will cost less than half of 1 Double Pylon (6 dots). As I say the Moulton dot is the world's first non-linear currency.

Absolutely. As you see here the Moulton Double Pylon costs 6 Moulton dots - the world's first non-linear currency. http://www.moultonbicycles.co.uk/models ... Pylon.html

The Moulton shown is a Double-Pylon the most expensive Moulton: beautiful machine but a rich man's toy. I've got 6 moultons, 4 vintage and 2 newish. The 4 vintage are a Super 4, a 1966 Deluxe, a 1965 Automatic and a 1967 Major (made by Raleigh). The latter is in excellent original condition...

The New versus the Old: Surly Troll

Has anyone ridden this modern steel rigid Mountain bike? (It seems to be the only rigid steel Mountain bike made today). I wonder how does it compares with its vintage brethren? http://www.bicycledoctor.co.uk/shop/surly-troll/

I'm also surprised by the number of potential sellers on Fleabay and elsewhere who put a bike up for sale without stating the frame size. Sometimes when the size of frame is stated it's obviously wrong because the bike wasn't produced in that size.

I've recently started looking at prices of Retro rigid mountain bikes on Ebay. There seems to be a considerable difference between BIN prices and prices actually achieved. Reasonable bikes often seem to sell for under £100 and some don't sell at all. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Retro-Te ...

What state is retro biking in at the moment?

Demographically speaking one would have thought that the interest in acquiring and riding vintage bikes particularly rigid Mountain bikes should be at an all time high. Someone in their teens or early twenties in the mid 'eighties and 'nineties who lusted after such bikes but could not afford...
