Kona's latest custom Operators and Processes

Re: Not strange at all. Just because it was modern at the time doesn't mean it was right. I never understood cutting down your handlebars in the day either. Even when risers came out they were never wide enough. 800mm is spot on now. It's only taken manufacturers 20 years to listen to...

Kona's latest custom Operators and Processes

Used to ride DH in the early '00s and new bikes solve all the gripes I use to have with old geometry, they were way too short, too tall, seat angles too slack, head angles too steep. If modern geometry had been about then we would be so much quicker today. Seat angles still look a bit slack on...

same route 2 totally different bikes, 1 retro 1 modern...

 The stem length, bar width and rise, fork angle, reach and wheelbase didn't go on to become the future. My money's still on the retrobike being faster over that terrain.

Fair play, that is stunning. Great attention to detail, down to the little hose clips. Love the anodising, it works really well and isn't overdone

On trails that smooth, your full sus would just slow you down so I'd go for the MBK. Wouldn't class the Fisher as modern though, an awful lot has changed in the world of full sus in the last 11 years.

    Mountain Cycle San Andreas Rebuild

You were out of breath because these old DH bikes were never designed to be pedalled anywhere, that geometry with the saddle out of the back wheel, short chainstay length, short wheelbase, long forks. I love it! It's a real beauty, you've really done it justice there chief.

Dropper posts, why and should I?

No, they were hopeless. Nice idea but you'd need a very loose pole for it to work.

Dropper posts, why and should I?

One of the greatest inventions, up there with SPDs and disc brakes. Set the right height for climbing, drop an inch for flat and twisty trails gives you a lot more room to move, then on the downhills, drop the seat right down for a lot more room to really chuck the bike about.

    Black, straight handlebars

Thanks guys, I'll probably go with the Ritcheys. More 'character' to go with the age of the bike.

    Black, straight handlebars

Re: Re: The Force ones would be preferable, older bars went too lightweight at one point and lost all their strength. If you have a couple of pictures and a width for them, I don't mind them cut but not silly short. And a price for postage to Wales I would do if I was changing the stem...

SPD shoes that you can actually walk in.

Been riding in Shimano MT71 for a while now on the commuter and I like them: The sole flexibility is always a trade-off. Either flexible enough to walk in comfortably but they're too floppy on the bike or rigid enough for good power transfer and they're uncomfortable off the bike. These have...

    '92 Scott Boulder

Thought I'd introduce my retro bike as a new member. This bike comes with a bit of a back story and means an awful lot to me. It belonged to the lad that I grew up next door to from 1990-ish until I moved away for uni in '99, we did a whole load of riding in the 90s together. 9 years ago he was...
