    Oh dear!!, headset/headtube problem

I'ts most probably just different tolerances in the headsets. I did once have this problem on the SM1000 and ended up making a shim out of a bit of coke can, worked perfectly.

    Garage Queen or Riders

Until I discovered Retrobike I didn't even realise garage queens existed. I ride my old bikes because I have them. Until last week my Cannondale was my single speed hack bike, used for commuting in my last job (12 miles each way with a few bridleways and Byways thrown in) and trips to the...

Retrobike Spring Meet 07 - The Aftermath

Did it in 1989, first big mountain bike ride I ever did! We did it from the traditional start near Petersfield (80 miles). That time we stayed at the Youth Hostel that is (was)? right on the route, conveniently at the half way point. We also dumped the car at Eastbourne, then went by train...

What was Your teen bike dream? Is the reality as good?

Teen Dream bike? Mountain Bikes hadn't been bloody well invented when I was a teen! I was about 26 or 27 when I first heard of them, incredibly enough it was a short film on Tomorrows World about these new fangled inventions from the States, described as BMX for Grown ups :D Had a...

Retrobike Spring Meet 07 - The Aftermath

Great day out guys I'm definitely going to make it out on a retro steed next time. If only to stop the piss taking about going modern! And just to prove the point that it's not about the bike, despite having lovely plush Fox forks, I was still struggling on the technical single track...

Question about paint - can you get it matched?

Take a wander into Halfords and see if you can find a car touch up paint in the same colour. They do little plastic bottle type things with both a brush and a pen type dispenser built in. Land Rover Bonnatti Grey springs to mind Or Seat have a lighter grey (almost looks like primer)...

RetroBike Spring Meet 24th Mar - The details ...

Had a final go tonight at fettling the Cannondale, it rides and stops but no gear changing at present (cos no cables). I hadn't planned on changing the brakes but the cheapie Taiwanese V brakes were playing up. Had a root around in the spares boxes and found my Shimano LX V brakes and levers...

It's not about the bike...Shut up Lance...It so is.

I have never bothered what people think about my choice of bike or componentry. Indeed I take great pleasure in buying good, anonymous kit rather than flash names. The Kalloy seat post on my 'dale, is a great example it's the same as a Ritchey (made by Kalloy of course) just not as well...

    When is Retro actually "Retro"

Yeah I didn't actually have anything in mind. As I bought my first mountain bike in 1989 and I'm still only on my fourth bike (and still own three of the four) I tend to get maximum value out of things, so don't neccessarily think of them as "old" or "retro". Indeed until I bought my Epic...

RetroBike Spring Meet 24th Mar - The details ...

Applying reverse logic to this theory I have been on a strict calorie controlled macro-biotic diet. I drink only natural spring water I have been out on the bike every day for the last month So I should definately be at the back! Oh! I forgot to add: I'm lying through my teeth...

    When is Retro actually "Retro"

At what point does something actually become retro? Is there a date before which something is "officially" retro? In motorsport circles, e.g. Classic Bike Racing, this is accepted as 1973, which is useless for our purposes. So is there one? and if not should there be?

Looks like the weather might not be too bad after all :) Forecast for Dorking tomorrow from the Beeb website Cloudy but dry Maximum temp 12°C Wind Northerly 14mph Visibility moderate. Retro bikes are still in bits so I'm going modern. :( Sorting out some suitable retro...

What was your 1st ever upgrade? What led you to this point?

Well I don't count the replacement frame on my Raleigh Mirage, caused by an excess of enthusiasm over ability on the Isle of White, a month after I got this my first bike. Luckily Raleigh replaced it under their 15 year frame warranty. First real upgrade was the next year when I entered my...

RetroBike Spring Meet 24th Mar - The details ...

I thought I'd enter into the spirit of the thing and get the 'dale sorted. I shouldn't have bothered! The alloy collett on top of the Tioga T bone stem that the expander bolt bears on, cracked in half so stem is now useless :x Substituted a Kalloy aluminium stem circa 1994 but no...
