Another vote for Pace. Could be stripped, cleaned, lubed and rebuilt in about half an hour. Still got mine.

Both brakes with as much as they'll take without locking.

Have to admit I usually resort to the hammer and vice for most jobs (headset etc) but thought I'd try a proper tool this time. Always there as as a last resort though... :-)

Only ever seen it on old TT bikes but now we seem to have 3 accepted wheel sizes for MTBs I wondered if anyone had tried it (eg 26" rear with a 29er up front)?

I stripped my MTRAX from 3x8 to 1x8 simply by ditching two chainrings and a front mech. Whether or not you need a chain guide probably depends on your setup and how much the chain skipped before. I never thought the mech was doing much chain guiding when it was 3x8 so didn't add anything new...

Nice. An Alpina was my first 'proper' MTB (although maybe I shouldn't discount the Emelle Cougar so quickly) and I've often missed the steel frame and rigid forks.
