cables inners and outers, brake and shifting

If you are using XTR, performance wise you can't be Shimano XTR cable set, the one with the coated black teflon inner wires. It is superb, having used both I know where I'd put my money. With respect, Jagwire are good as are Clarks, Transfil is another alternative, if you go down this route...

    grease.

I've used hundreds of different greases over 20 plus years, the only grease I don't like is lithium, although cheap, it used to dry out and go powdery and resulted in stuck seat posts, however, that was some years ago, but it was enough for me to not use it again, some have mentioned exus blue...

New here - 1991 GT Team Avalanche

Welcome sptb, Good to see you getting involved and all nostalgic! And a cracking bike Looking at the bike, cassette would be 7 speed? 12-28 would be fine to replace, not sure there is much choice for that. Short cage limit would be about 28t Chainrings may be ok, clean them up and have a...

    Replacement rear dérailleur

The spring in exage shifters used to stick causing it not to work, and sometimes the spring broke.........but reading your post again, I'd be inclined to start with a new inner and outer gear cable. First things to check, remove the outer gear housing from the stop. You can do this simply, have...

    Mavic 230

A sub 400g mtb rim is light, there weren't many round at the time, araya 395 was one other, they were lighter than an x517/ A mavic 230 was a lighter and updated version of the 231. Sadly the 230's we/re not the strongest rims available, mind the 90s brought us some massive changes for mtb...

    Shimano m750 freehub service

Plus 1 for the above. additional notes, there will be 9, 1/4 " bearings each side You can strip the internals of a freehub body, its a bit fiddly but doable, but when they seizing or sticking, the damage is already done, so it may run rough when flushed out.

Stripped Square Taper Crank Extraction Threads

I think there is a solution, of rethreading and using a slightly larger extractor, I remember using a stronglight or ta extractor, if my memory serves me. however this is not an easy off the shelf job for parts. Other option is helicoil it. I'll check in the workshop tomorrow as I think there...
