    Cycling: Big In Japan

Re: Re: Tokyo has quite good air quality due to less traffic, most people use the amazing efficient subway system which leads to lower air pollution. So cycling is no problem, or so it seemed to me. Certainly plenty of cyclists around. In Jakarta, Beijing or Bangkok the pollution will kill...

    Cycling: Big In Japan

Been in Tokyo for a week. Here a few impressions: Bicycles are everywhere! Cars are discouraged, parking fees are exhorbitant, road discipline is good, bike theft hardly happens... cycling is huge here.

    HG chain or KMC

Re: OK thanks, though i doubt internal / external widths are the only technical difference between HG and IG as both were available simultaneously back in the '90s. If it were only about widths and HG is comparable with IG in that respect, why make IG at all and clearly specify compatibility on...

    HG chain or KMC

Re: How about IG vs HG chains? My STX Lavadome crankset says "IG chain only" and i always followed this but it seems genuine Shimano IG are getting harder to find. I believe there may be fakes on ebay (too cheap, dodgy looking packaging with not-quite-right typeface and even spelling mistakes)...

    7 speed gripshifters

Re: My SRT-400 front shifter has multiple graduations between shifts (4 or 5 clicks to execute a chainring shift), whereas my SRT-600 has one graduation over the entire shift (1 click). Personal taste but... i prefer my 1996 gripshift over my 2013 XT rapidfire.

    25 years of XTR infographic

That is funny but er... 80% loss.. That reminds me a true story my father told me about when my parents went to 'parent's day' at my sister's school many years ago. The maths teacher was explaining in exasperated tones that my sister only scored 35% in her maths test. My mother quickly replied...

Re: So.. With two grand tours under the belt the next challenge is obvious.. Do the 2017 Giro d'Italia which would mean completing all three grand tours on retro MTBs :-) I started the Giro last month and my body is feeling strong again, and broken wrist from May is on the mend, so should be...

Re: Update: After completing the 2011 TdF i went on to tackle the 2014 Vuelta a Espana. Having suffered a bit healthwise leading to lower monthly mileage for several months in 2014 and 2015 it took quite a while but i completed the Vuelta in Sept 2016. Here's the monthly ride tracking:
