Early 80s Dawes Lightning rolling resto

Re: Me too.. one of these was my first road bike. Great to see, brings back some memories! Rode mine hard for 5 or 6 years, eventually my Dad helped me buy a better and larger bike after following me to a race and watching me spinning my little heart out on the knackered and too small...

    Which stainless spokes to get?

Re: DT Swiss Competition are excellent spokes. Good quality spokes can be reused multiple times in several builds without problem, it's component compatibility and quality of assembly which count most. Get Roger Musson's book "Professional Guide to Wheel Building" if you can, it's a superb...

    Which automatic retro car?

Re: Where cars are concerned, the words 'automatic' and 'retro' are generally not a great combination. Ageing auto transmissions are just waiting to drain your wallet.

    TdF 2017 chit-chat

Re: French crowd no class, booing the yellow jersey. Sky should work together (inc Froome) to get Landa a couple of seconds or secure one of the time bonuses and knock Bardet off the podium. That would be sweet!

Cycle helmet debate number 56565647564 with a twist

Re: I get the whole "better with than without" and "safety first" etc. but... i do have some doubts about cycle helmets, they are pathetic compared to say a motorcycle helmet. My motorcycle helmet weighs 1,300g, has sophisticated construction and is quite obviously capable of significant...

    1986 Carlton Carrera 531c

Cool.. yes back in the mid '80s we used to ride to Dees across the Chilterns from Wendover where we lived at the time. Happy days..

    1986 Carlton Carrera 531c

Re: I noticed a few loose spokes and on inspection some of the eyelets had fatigued inside the rim beneath the nipple (socketed eyelets in a double walled rim) and broken up leading to loss of spoke tension. I wondered if the otherwise faultless rims could be re-eyeletted but i couldn't find...

Re: Re: Marvellous to see that old advert! Marshalllucky would you mind sharing which issue of Winner has the advert and maybe posting a pic of the cover? So i can look out for it. Or... is yours for sale by any chance..? :-) I wonder which original sales catalogue would show this model...

    Amberwall tyres?

Re: If you ride mostly tarmac > hardpack the best would be Fairweather, if mostly hardpack > mud (and the knobbliest off-road look) then Smoke/Dart. Aggressive mud tyres are slower, noisier and wear much faster on hard surfaces. Unless you really expect to do mostly off-road riding, you'll get...

    Chain Cleaning

Yes! Chain cleaner gadgets are the way to go. So easy you'll clean the chain more frequently which is better than doing a meticulous off-the-frame job once in a blue moon. Mine is "Finish Line" and can buy replacement brush kits to restore the tool, i've been using it quite a while and didn't...

    Amberwall tyres?

Jimo i found them in a shop in Tokyo so grabbed a pair. Look good and light too with kevlar folding bead. No idea if available in UK but could probably be ordered online somewhere. Likely not the cheapest option but... new, good quality amberwall 26" knobblies do exist.

Shimano IG chains real or fake?

Re: I reckon IG chains on ebay are fake. Here's why: Red flags: - Shimano no longer shows IG chains on their official website. Only HG for 6/7/8 speed. - From what i can find, no official bike shops or branded suppliers are stocking IG. Ebay sellers supplying IG almost always trace to a Chinese...
