    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

Did a bit more on it this evening: Stripped the front end out, cleaned and regreased the headrace bearings. Also used a bit of wire wool and polish on the chrome cups and fixings as they were a bit rusty. Gave the handlebars a bit of a polish - they're a bit rusty as well, but no come up too...

    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

This evening i went to strip and regrease the rear wheel bearings, the hubs and bearings were full of a mix water and old manky grease - they were in a lot worse state than the front hub. As i cleaned things up i noticed scores and pitting on the bearing races, cones and the majority of the...

    80's Specialized Rockhopper

What are 80's rockhoppers generally worth? - i haven't a clue? I had a look at the bbc bikes ebay shop and saw an '88 stump jumper comp - £1904.25

    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

Some more progress today - spent a couple of hours or so this afternoon on it. I gave the front wheel a good clean, stripped the wheel spindle from the hub and got the old grease out - had the bearings out and cleaned them up, and re-assembled with fresh grease - rolls a lot better now as it...

OK mate, thanks for the advice. Next job will be the cleanup. i also lubed the front brake cable earlier and adjusted the brake so it's central and works correctly. I was also having a good look around the crank and chainwheel area and as i spun the crank backwards i noticed the 3 front...

They say on the sidewall inflate to 40 - 65 psi. Would they be better inflated towards the higher psi?

    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

Very true - i was debating over road or knobbly type tyres for ages, but finally decided on the knobblies, may not be so good on the road but we have a few cycle paths round my way which are mud / gravel so went for a compromise.

Trebz: Thanks for the tips - i will follow your recommendations. :) SIMONFREESE: Cheers - i'm hoping it's going to turn out ok, i don't really know what i'm doing - just making it up as i go along! The new tyres and tubes turned up today - I've gone for the cheapest tyres i...

    80's Specialized Rockhopper

Not mine, but saw this while having a browse at Rockhoppers on ebay. Anyone know what the exact year of it is? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190790506314? ... 1423.l2649 My project '88 Rockhopper has an Exage groupset (i think thats what it's called...) This one has Deore - does that make...

    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

Well, i made a start on it today. I knew that seatpost was stuck - so made trying to get it out the first job. About an hour of "gentle coaxing" first with a rubber mallet, a bit of frustration, some choice words then followed by a few gallons of WD40, a bit of wiggling and some heavy duty...

    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

Thanks for the tips Trebz. My plan is to get it clean and functional for starters, and do a few gentle rides to start with and ease myself into two wheels with "pedal power" (i'm not as young and as fit as i used to be by a long way!). Also picked the missus up a cheap mtb a while back so...

    1988 Specialized Rockhopper

Thanks for the wise words, Trebz. I'm also a keen motorcyclist, so have lots of oils and tubs of grease lying around to be able to use on this project - i service and work on my own motorcycles to a point, just a little nervous as never really worked much on push bikes. I want to get it as...

£12.50 Muddy Fox Alu Sport (*UPDATE*)

Nice looking bike - love the purple colour, anodized bits and marzocchi forks. Muddy Fox is a brand i'm familiar from back in the day when i used to have mountain bikes.
