Hub rebuilds on a Marin Pallisades Trail '88

I think I've found a decent mechanic locally now, and there are other shops which are better and more reliable, so I'll chalk that up to experience. On this older bike it's a nice opportunity to learn how to do a few jobs myself, but having watched a few vids on rim truing I decided it was...

Hub rebuilds on a Marin Pallisades Trail '88

Re: https://giphy.com/gifs/bike-wheel-rim-w ... PQnbwIwIyk Not sure how well this works but here you go. This was *after* I paid the shop to true both wheels. They also failed to tighten the lock nut on the front cone so when I put the wheel on it was flapping around like crazy. I'll not be...

Hub rebuilds on a Marin Pallisades Trail '88

Re: Re: Ah, interesting. The rim is all over the place, but I think that's because the rim needs work rather than to do with the hub. I could be wrong though! Your comment on the bearing is why I was wondering if this is a good opportunity to jump forward a decade or two by replacing with a...

Hub rebuilds on a Marin Pallisades Trail '88

Hi- I can't find much useful info on this online, but I may be searching for the wrong terms. I adjusted the cone bearings on this bike (still on original wheels and bearings) but I think they need a rebuild. I also tried to get a local bike shop to true the rear wheel and they did an awful...

Best tires for 88 Marin Palisades Trail

Just to follow up, I got some Panaracer Fire XC's and they fit very nicely! Not too expensive either. Thanks for the help.

Best tires for 88 Marin Palisades Trail

Re: Really useful! Thanks. The ones I'd found on Amazon before were Schwalbe Land Cruiser tyres, 26" by 1.75. Looking at them again, they might be good for summer use since I do mix road and off-road, but there are a lot of horse riders around here, and during the winter months they churn...

Best tires for 88 Marin Palisades Trail

I replaced the original tires on my bike with some 26 x 2.1 Specialised Ground Controls, but they are too wide for the bike. They are prone to rubbing on the frame, and the slightest but of mud or wet leaves clogs between the brakes and frame until I grind to a halt! I've even broken another...

Hi- I'm looking for a MT60 'Deore' mech or Shimano Exage Trail rear mech for my '88 Marin Pallisades. Ideally around £15 - £20 but let me know if that's a bit out! I'm in the UK, SW England. Many thanks in advance, John

Re: Thanks for the advice! Is it best just to post a wanted message in the "MTB Wanted" forum?

Rear derailleur for '88 Marin Pallisades

Hi! My rear derailleur decided to eat a stick on a ride at the weekend, and a lug on a cast piece of it has broken off, so it's a goner. Is anyone able to advise on a suitable replacement? I realise that I need to pick one to match the number of speeds (although 6 speed seems rare ... 6/7...

Replacing bottom bracket on '88 Marin Pallisades Trail

Thanks for the excellent info. Toolkit arrived, cranks came off pretty easily. I've measured 68x118 so that's clear enough. The existing BB tapers have a threaded bolt sticking out, and to remove the cranks I had to remove nuts. It looks from the photo like the replacement UN-55 requires bolts...

Replacing bottom bracket on '88 Marin Pallisades Trail

Hi- New to this board and newly bitten by the cycling bug. I've been using an old Marin bike that looks exactly like this one viewtopic.php?t=166860 ... except mine has a different saddle, and the handlebars are red. My parents bought this new when I was a kid! I've been trying to keep it...
