Re: Marin Bear Valley SE 1994 Success! Right STX 7 speed Lever installed, new cable with outers, 90% working! A brief 5 minute ride in the street to check it and the bike feels really good. Almost identical to the original STX SE part too. So now needs other cable replaced and I'll do the...

Re: Got the brake/shift levers. Might have this back on the road by Tuesday! Still need to give it a good clean.

Re: Marin Bear Valley SE 1994 Managed to get a set of STX shifters/brake levers relatively cheap on eBay...on the same day my new ones arrived! The new ones are not the right version anyway as they don't work with Canti brakes even though I tried to get the right version. Have a neck pair of...

I have no fear on that lol, first thing I did on my road bike was take 2cm off the stem.

    Riding positions

Re: This is my approximate view. I've seen a few respected road biking people on the web state that you should have your bars roughly in line with the front axle. This makes sense with the advice above. Shorten the stem and give it some rise. I did 15 miles into work this morning and it...

    Riding positions

Re: Re: Don't mind the position actually, coming from road bikes it feels more like that. Really wondered if it was a 90's thing, which it does seem to be. I might try something a bit shorter, forgot to check the stem length. It's got road orientated tyres on it for my commute tomorrow. 15...

    Riding positions

Tonight I had a proper first ride on my Karakoram. My impression is of a long bike with a very road bike stretched out riding position. The set up is the same as this picture. My Charge Spoon 29er is much more upright, as are most MTB's I've ridden. My Marin feels a bit stretched but...

Re: I think someone did ask about STX recently but few replies. Tonight I've taken the reflectors off and had a better look at it. Needs thorough clean but it seems to have been kept ok mechanically. I've swapped the god awful seat for a Selle Turbo-matic II for now. I love the Panaracers...

Re: Well I've ordered some new Shimano shifters/brakes til I can get a replacement for the right hand STX SE set. Bit too much cash at the mo £16 for new versus £40-50ish for used originals. I'll try and hunt some down.

    Gt Karakoram Inferno 1991

Loving this one, bit faded in places but rides beautifully. It's a long bike, quite a stretched out feel. Really bitten by the retro bug with the Marin that arrived on the same day.

Re: Marin Bear Valley SE 1994 Will do, ASAP. Hopefully I can spend half an hour tonight getting some cleaning done. Be glad you didn't see the horrendous frame bag or pump brackets!

Marin Bear Valley SE 1994 *New pics: page 2*

Picked it up today for a great price. Needs a good clean and surface rust removal and I broke the bolt that holds the internals in the STX right shifter cos I'm an idiot sometimes. It's nice and light and runs well with the Panaracers.

    Townsend Hot Iron Reynolds 501

1991, Reynolds 501 main tubes. Shimano gs100 group and shifters. Big bike, rides well, pretty good condition. I've bought it for fun commuting so a big frame is good for road and I've put some Michelin Country Rock tyres on it but not had chance to try them yet. I think they were...

Or do I go neo-retro with a modern mech?

What would be an appropriate rear mech and shifter? Sachs Huret? IIRC you have a svelte on one of your bikes?

Re: Thanks. Did 14 miles today. I enjoyed half of it and hated half of it cos of the damn wind. I liked the bars. Seemed comfy enough. Not much padding in the wraps. Very good for out of the seat riding. Need to tweak the height/levelling if they were staying on but I want to try standard drops...
