    Well, now, guess what I've just done - stuck 700c wheels in place of 27" jobbies on my old 531, bought c. 1988 and barely used since... Bike has mudguard eyes and I found it was a little tight running 27" wheels and tyres, plus wheels were old, had a freewheel not cassette and frankly, 27"...

    Yes, friction type, but also have a Sirrus with thumb shifters which are much better - if I keep my old machine then I'll eventually change to some sort of bar levers (either the combo jobs with brake levers or bar ends) FYI mine are shimano 600EX, circa 1988 - braze on levers and rear gear

    I remember this bike from my youth, it was around £180 in bout 1985ish, yours looks in excellent condition. It is indeed 531 main tubes only, the saddle is new, but the brakes, gears and possibly chainset (if it's SR) are original, as possibly are the wheels. I think it ran 73 degree...
