Carbon has silicone in it which is why it's difficult to paint. Probably explains why it flakes off after a while. I think the easiest option is to flat it back and paint over the existing laquer.

Blimey, I used to have one of these. In red too. It must have been around '95 and it got nicked while I was standing about 3 metres away from it. It was second hand and had been messed around with but still had some of the bits that one had. Very nostalgic!
