1996 Marin Pine Mountain to split or not to split

I'd just keep it and use it carefully. As time goes on, it will only get harder and harder to find unabused original spec rigids like these. Why wouldn't you use a frame as big as 19" for off-road riding? I've got a 19/20" Dawes and a 23" Raleigh and use both, although I am more cautious when...

1980s market segmentation: ATB vs. MTB

Being a fan of old-school fully rigid 26" machines for their simplicity and lighter weight, I've often pondered the correct term myself. I have, amongst other things, a couple of old Raleighs, a Mustang from around '89, and a Highlander from '91 and they both have "all terrain" and "ATB" on...

    26"TYRES

Re: Re: Land Cruiser Plus have got better puncture protection. I've got a set of 26" x 1.75 on an old Raleigh MTB, and I run Delta Cruiser Plus in 35c width on an old hybrid. Good strong tyres and not expensive either.

What Kind of Raleigh 531 ST do I have? Please help!

Re: Could it simply be a Raleigh frameset with Touring geometry and therefore supplied in 531ST tubing - or is the wheelbase a bit too short? It could have originally been built up from a bare frame rather than bought as a complete bike. On the other hand it could have started life as...

Falcon Defiant 26" MTB - anyone got one?

Re: Thanks, glad to hear mine was still built in-house there before everything was outsourced and bought in from overseas. I'm well aware it's a pretty low-end spec, I got it via a friend who worked for the car dealer and I gather they were selling them on essentially at cost price as a promo...

Falcon Defiant 26" MTB - anyone got one?

A back garden bramble patch clearance has unearthed a long-lost 1996/97 Falcon Defiant, which was purchased new for the princely sum of £60 from a car dealer as part of some test drive promotion they were running! It's a 22" rigid frame, metallic green, horizontal top tube, welded hi-tensile...

"New" bike for commuting - advice? :)

£200 is way too much money to be paying for a 20 year old urban commuting bike, you should be looking at well under £100, maybe even under £50. Ideally you want something reliable but unfashionable, so it has low attraction to bike thieves. A 700c wheel hybrid would probably serve you better...

Oversized frame tubes, ugly bling or actually beneficial?

That's my point, they are adding extra material that just adds weight, and such bikes usually have cheap wheels etc, so they can't even be treated hard enough to need a super-strong frame. I pulled such an ugly brute out of a bin a few months ago, and took the damaged front mech & changer off so...

Oversized frame tubes, ugly bling or actually beneficial?

One thing that seems to set apart old-school bikes from modern ones is the appearance of the frames and the size of the tubes. If you look at a late 80's or early-mid 90's rigid MTB frame in a fairly big size, they often don't actually look that different from a typical road frame of the same...

    Is this frame trashed?

There's nothing silly about it at all, I was about to post suggesting exactly the same remedy. If the two realistic options available to you are:- 1) chuck it in the skip, or 2) engineer a cheap but unpretty bodge and keep on...

Complete rebuild of 1990's MTB to 2016 XT spec 1x10

Re: I just found this thread after searching for "Apollo Laser", as I own a very shabby looking one myself that I got for £10 to use as a not-worth-stealing pub bike! Totally fascinating build, yet completely bonkers to do so much work on a bike with a gas pipe frame! I love the result...

    Dawes Leopard, how old?

Hi, I've lurked on here for some time but just registered. I prefer stuff that's got a lugged steel frame and was made in England, which pretty much rules out 99% of modern bikes! I wanted to ask about the possible age of a few bikes, but I'll keep it to one per thread, so here goes with the...
