hmm i guess they dropped the 'sport' part.. i dunno as far as ubrakes.. in 1987/88 they were popular but by 1989 almost all companies switched to rear cantis.

interesting! mine says "competition series" on it and the head badge looks different. I guess they kept the color scheme. 1988 would be in line with the ubrake as well. I have no idea what was original on my competition series.. it had an XT headset and xt RD when I got it though

i think it's cool Jamis decided to spec a Prestige frame with the Deore parts.. I wonder if they had an all XT model with a prestige fork too. I'd rather have a prestige frame and deore bits than a run of the mill double/triple butted frame with XT parts. In the late 80s there was hardly any...

wow cool a ubrake version! I wonder if that is a year earlier or the ubrake was used because it was a small frame. Interesting that you say it's all deore.. makes sense based on the parts that came with my bike. But it's unusual that they would offer a Prestige frame with deore parts i think...

we're twins :D some "as found" pics.. not quite as good as condition as the OPs and unfortunately no original saddle but otherwise pretty nice :) paint is deeeeeep purple with some flake in it

this will have to tide you over ;) also, i'm not going to do anything crazy with this build despite some of my earlier ideas. i will probably even keep the triple ring on there which is unusual for my builds. Just want to keep all the suntour stuff together

cheers.. and yeah black parts don't go well with the dark purple on this bike imo. the tires are pure function.. I love the Compass 26x1.75 tire.. very supple and fast, and as you point out the skinwall is also pretty classy

hah.. i wish they were purple but they don't really stand out too much, especially since it's a short cage RD. and at least the red is in the same color palette.. if they were green or yellow for example then they'd really clash.

^ nice Jamis collection.. I want one of those fillet brazed diablos! this build is almost done.. waiting on some bar tape to be delivered as the tape i bought locally isn't quite as good of a color match as I had hoped. Should weigh in at just about 25 pounds when done

Not a fan of dirt drops, huh? Flat bars hurt my wrists after a while and I feel way more in control with a drop bar. The Gary bar and brake levers aren't period correct, but they were using dirt drops back in the 80s.. Here's a fat tire flyer from 1986 ;)
