the unofficially cool MTB drop bar thread

Honest question because i have luckily never had a derailleur spring fail--if a high normal derailleur spring fails, which way does it shift? On the one hand, the derailleur cage would be pulled down, so in the low direction, but the chain would want to fall down too, in the high direction. I...

Yeah like a lot of things it wasn't Shimano's invention... :) This is one of those things that if the low normal had gained adoption first, and then Shimano came up with the "rapid-fall" high normal, people would probably complain about high-normal. Theoretically, I think there are advantages...

Yes. Unbolt the cable and the thing shifts easier.

That's a question to me? I actually like the rapid rise motion a lot. I decided to move it from another bike, where it was kind of confusing. I did, in fact, have the Vs lying around at the time, and this was an opportunity to unite the two on one bike. In the process, the other bike is now XT...

1992 Corratec 2005 drop bar conversion

@The Kilt , I got so into answering about drop bars i forgot to say thanks for the compliment. I thunk one thing so great about the 1990s was the choice people had in the bike market. There were a lot of options and that has just shrunk since... When I get on my road bike, it feels super...

I raised the idea over the weekend of a retro-mod-BotM, and bikes like this are the reason why. Trying to see if there is wider desire for something like this, what do you think? Post in thread 'Bike of the Month timetable and suggestions thread'...

Also there is an entire early period in mtb history where drop bar bikes were not that uncommon. And i get a kick out of choosing the tech that no one else chose--see drop bar mountain bikes and rapid rise derailleurs :)

Oh, this gets philosophical fast. I was a roadie originally, and I don't like flat bars, so there is that. My bikes all have either drops or albatross style bars. But also, there are people trying to recreate Cunningham type dirt drop racers, like @Tsundere and his Cunningdale projects...

The 2005 conversion is basically done and has its own bike thread now. https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1992-corratec-2005-drop-bar-conversion.443144/ Here is a shot, there are more in the thread:

And a proper drive side shot. I think I am getting better at taking these photos. Here, when I took the shot, the handlebars were actually at the center of the frame so that the left side almost disappeared behind the right side, and I was way back. So the bike was actually in the lower left...

    1989 Diamond Back Apex build

If you have a 1 inch steerer--it looked like 1 1/8 inch in the pic--, then you end up with a 22.2 post, and i don't know if 22.2 to 25,4 or 28,6 adapters exist.... But if its 1 inch then you might be able to find a bmx style quill stem, but watch the handlebar clamp diameter, i guess. I...

Cool. I like to modify too, why not make the bikes exactly what you want? And as long as you are using the secret click in my favorite thumbies, all is forgiven :) It's not a criticism, just a general observation about that annoying tapered transition on ahead adapters. It is possible to make...

Cantilever bolts …did I miss the memo?

Dear Shimano, OMG, and here I was trying to be strong, and to not make this all about me. But I knew it, you grafted the head of an M8 ISO 7380 onto the threads of an M6 ISO 7380 buttonhead hex bolt for cantilever brakes and spec'd a weird washer on purpose . . . to hurt me. And I bet it was...

Cantilever bolts …did I miss the memo?

Dear Shimano, Let's be frank . . . you're big enough to take the criticism. It might be hard to hear, but there are a whole bunch of us out there who really feel that you peaked in, let's just say for argument's sake, the early 90s, and would really appreciate it if you stopped/undid this...

No worries, happy to help out. They have been great in the past for stuff that is beyond the realm of a normal hardware store.

Cantilever bolts …did I miss the memo?

I thought the same--either machining an M8 ISO 7380 to M6 or refinishing a Shimano Y-82N18800. Or Alibaba here I come...

Cantilever bolts …did I miss the memo?

@Antstark, if it were so simple, you probably would have found them already. It's a "special bolt," which I guess we already knew. The folks at the machine shop didn't have anything, and the closest M6 buttonhead bolt is an ISO 7380, which has a head diameter of 10.5 mm and head height of 3.3...

In the spirit of not letting the 5% left to do on a project become an excuse not to go riding, I took the bike out for a little spin along the river and to take some pictures. I want to start doing my Cent Cols rides again as soon as possible, and the weather is starting to stabilize. There...
