San Francisco Airport Vintage MTB exhibit

What pic/bike in this thread? The two Cunninghams on display at SFO are both 26" wheeled bikes.

San Francisco Airport Vintage MTB exhibit

It's going to be a great exhibit. About two dozen bikes. NorCal focused. There are about 10-12 truly great/important bikes, 6-8 "nice examples", and about 6 decidedly "meh" (the modern stuff and more mass-produced stuff -- but they wanted to show where we are today with MTB's). I'm sure...

June 2012 BoTM 'Dead End Special' - Nominations Please

Agree! I would enter this bike on that basis (alone), except obviously the previous owner corrected the "dead-end". Maybe the curved seatpost? I have to say, this is one of the less well-conceived (and executed so far) ideas for a "special" month. Fewer special months would probably be...

June 2012 BoTM 'Dead End Special' - Nominations Please

So 26"-wheeled, all-rigid, fillet-brazed steel bikes are fine, right?

    1993 Ibis Scorcher

Yup. Here's the one pic that was posted for that auction:

    1993 Ibis Scorcher

Here are a couple of interesting Scorcher sites: Ibis’ 30/30/30 (a great series!) page on the Scorcher with links to several other articles http://www.ibiscycles.com/about/303030/11_the_scorcher_will_teach_you/ First Flight’s Scorcher...

    1993 Ibis Scorcher

The tires are the originals (at least as far as I can tell). The previous (and first/only other) owner was an Ibis employee BITD. He used it mostly has a fixed gear road bike with different bars and perhaps skinnier tires -- which would account for the good condition of these. Thankfully he...

    1993 Ibis Scorcher

A recent acquisition. This one didn’t need much work. A very cool and unusual bike. Ibis made 100 of these. It was the brainchild of Wes Williams -- their primary welder at the time. Here are some pics. Full gallery here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/halaburt/sets/72157629688086198/...

    Just me?

If we all liked the exact same bikes and used (or didn’t) them in the exact same way, things would be pretty boring --- and even more expensive. For me, the Repack-type bikes are interesting and important --- but ultimately wall-hangers because they aren’t something that I WANT to ride...

1983 Steve Potts Brazed MTB [finished]

All done now. I’m VERY happy with how this turned out -- and especially pleased I didn’t try to do anything substantial with the paint or (lack of) decals. I think it’s a nice balance between having a bike with a real story to tell -- but that also functions perfectly with a nice mix of it’s...

1983 Steve Potts Brazed MTB [finished]

True!... but I couldn't help myself. Also, this isn't the Joey P. bike... Think "Mad Bomber" instead.

1983 Steve Potts Brazed MTB [finished]

Yes, the sad truth is this one is way too small for me to really ride myself. I couldn't resist the bike's provenance and it makes a great addition to the "guest bike fleet" though (that Nik is already familiar with ). There clearly weren't enough 6'5" tall MTB enthusissts with...

1983 Steve Potts Brazed MTB [finished]

The bike is in mid build-up. A few issues, but most is all good. I'm still waiting for the right pedals --- one set is in the mail to me and another candidate is still out there on eBay. The rear derailleur I'd planned to use (a Suntour ARX) didn't quite work well enough with the...

1983 Steve Potts Brazed MTB [finished]

I visited Steve Potts' workshop today to have him check over the frame and fork for alignment and any other concerns prior to beginning the rebuild. For the frame, Steve uses a series of fixtures on a flat table. The BB shell is clamped down, and then he sequentially checks the seat tube...

The spacers between the flanges are steel and, I believe, Cadmium-plated.
