    Threaded Frustration

I LOVE threaded forks. Threadless forks always seem like compromises to me -- espeically if spacers are involved. If I have any choice, I'll always go threaded even on new and/or custom stuff today. Although, I'll admit it's sad when a frame is separated from the fork that was made to go with it.

    1998 WTB Ti Phoenix

Thanks for the kind words everyone. This round of updates/upgrades has been fun and going back through those old pics and captions was interesting for me. My favorite changes: Getting the fork (re-)painted to match the frame. As noted in those early pics, the fork was initally powder...

the unofficially cool MTB drop bar thread

Thanks! Yes, those are S&S couplers. I setup a "build" thread for it over in the >='98 section with links to more complete photo sets: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1736622

    1998 WTB Ti Phoenix

This is a largely-custom bike I had built for me in 1998. It’s a bike I tried to make very (probably too) versatile -- with S&S couplings and the multiple bar setups. The parts mix was pretty similar to my ’92 Cunningham and ’95 Newsboy -- in other words, all WTB/Potts/Cunningham and mostly...

the unofficially cool MTB drop bar thread

It's a custom stem I had made by Wes Williams (Willits Brand) when the bike was new. Titanium 1-1/8" Quill style ~6.5" rise, ~3.5" reach (or ~53deg, ~150mm) Bar clamp is 25.4mm with scalloped cutouts on the underside to allow the curved bar to slide in without having to spread to clamp too...

    BOTM Nov 2012. Entries open.

To be fair, should we also dismiss all the bikes that get entered with their saddles at least that much nose-down? That would typically knock out about 1/3 of the BoTM entries I think.

    Loose headset cups - Help?

Chris King does offer headsets with oversize skirts to address this exact problem via special order. That's mentioned along with some other tips on their website here: http://chrisking.com/tech/tech_headsets#time

1 1/8 steerer tube thread size.

So you're trying to convert a 1-1/8" threaded headset to be threadless by hand-filing the threads out of the adjusting nut? Several reactions: - I hope you have a really, really good reason for doing that vs. the seemingly quick/easy/safe/cheap route of just buying a new headset. - It will...

1 1/8 steerer tube thread size.

1-1/8" x 26tpi, H2 thread. It's a pretty rare size outside of the bicycle world. Park Tool (and probably other bike-specific tool companies) sell dies in that size. Taps are much more difficult to find.

Merlin pressed BB w/ Grease Guard - Advice Please

You may have already noticed/realized this, but the SKF bearing in your photo above doesn't appear to have the groove (and hole) cut into it that would allow it to actually be greased using those ports on the underside of the BB shell. Any standard (including Phil) 6003 bearing you replace it...

Here is Charlie riding his heavily-modified Gitane(?) that pre-dates his Cunninghams. Photo is from the aforementioned http://www.cunninghambikes.com website: And here is Cunningham Expedition #CC (still in use by him today). This would be the bike that Don Cook was referring to in that...

San Francisco Airport Vintage MTB exhibit

The bike(s) being referred to by Kelly and Slate were not at all what most people -- including Cunningham himself -- would think of as “mountain bikes”. Rather, they were adaptations of road or cyclocross-style bikes. This model, distinct from Cunningham's mountain bikes, was referred to...
