When was the Mountain Bike Invented? And who by?

I was indeed a member of the RSF towards the end of the 60's, often riding with the inspirational Bernard Heath (of Mountain Bothies Association fame) but this was always on traditional road bikes. I vividly remember riding Jacobs Ladder on 54"fixed with sprints and tubs in 1968. The "tracker"...

When was the Mountain Bike Invented? And who by?

Back in 1966, along with a bunch of mates, I had a bike known then as a tracker. I'm sure they were popular everywhere. It had a road frame built for 27" wheels but was fitted with 26x1 3/8 wheels shod with knobbly cycle speedway tyres, so plenty of clearance. They either had flat or cowhorn...

    Skol 6 Day Race

Does anyone remember the Skol 6 at the old Wembley Pool back in the 60's, early 70's. I went to watch a couple of times. There was the Chris Barber Jazz Band playing in the track centre along with hordes of drunken spectators. The riders slept in cabins in the track centre taking it in turns to...

    saba frames - info?

Re: Saba That's right, Italo Berigliano was the driving force but he sadly died, Norman Evans did sales and went on to start Ceeway Marketing. Chris Greener was the accountant. They imported lots of exotic Italian stuff. I used to buy investment cast lugs and Columbus tubing off them. I...

    Harry Hall

I had two Harry Hall frames back in 1969/70 both 531. They were actually built by Bob Jackson in Leeds who Harry used for many years. He may well have used other builders over the years but wasn't a frame builder himself. His wheels, however, were legendary and he used to devote pretty much...

Can anybody ID this Birmingham made frame?

The made in Birmingham bits are the lugs, fork crown and bottom bracket shell made by Haden Bros. If I remember correctly they were their Europa range. The lugs, though good quality, were a touch on the thick side and needed a lot of filing thus reducing their popularity with builders at the...

Ever Heard of Tommy Godwin? Repost? A must read story.

And this Tommy Godwin was presenting medals at the recent UCI world cup event at the new London Olympic velodrome. Now aged 91 and an absolute top bloke! It's an odd coincidence that there were two highly successful Tommy Godwin cyclists at pretty much the same time albeit in very different...

This was me 38 years ago.

If i remember correctly this was taken by the local paper the day before the 1974 Bromsgrove Grand Prix. It's my training bike as my race bike had been cleaned and put to bed. I found the photo only recently when sorting through my late father's effects. Note the lack of braze-ons and very rare...

As the builder of the bike all those years ago, I personally built all the 753 frames, I have to say I'm dead chuffed. Thanks everybody! Andy

Yes its for Campag bottom brackets. I just need to check I its where I think it is. They are impossible to remove undamaged without it.

I'm pretty sure I've got the tool you need but I'll need to check when I'm back home on Sunday. You're welcome to borrow it. If its the origional bb then it'll be the very same tool used to fit it on the bike when it was built. Pm me and we can arrange posting. Andy

The myth of Biopace... Let's discuss

They were! Well Williams in Birmingham produced them I believe. I had some in the 60's. They were a sort of angular ellipse ish. Chris Bell and his Egg Rings were way better than Shimano's offering. Personally I'm not a fan.
