1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting it on the road. That Corsair is a nice looking bike. I'm riding a Raleigh Equipe at the moment. 18-23 steel, cheapo Sachs derailleurs, steel wheels etc. I got it for £35 as I wanted a bike that I could leave at the station without worrying about it being...

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

Thanks for asking :). Holidays have caused a brief hiatus and the bottom bracket tool that I ordered didn't arrive. I've got a replacement now, so I can continue with the disassembly and clean up the frame soon. I have cleaned and regreased the wheel hubs, which was my first time attempting...

    1950 - Holdsworth Cyclone-De-Luxe

That's very useful, thank you. A tablespoon per litre would be 1.5% oxalic acid solution, so it sounds like I don't need too much of it. Probably a stupid question, but soaking in baking soda, is that dry powder or mixed with water? Some of the decals are under the clear coat and some are...

    1950 - Holdsworth Cyclone-De-Luxe

That must have looked beautiful when it was new. Watching with interest. I'll be interested to see how to treat the surface rust on the frame since you want to keep the original paintwork. That's a process I'm still researching for my own bike I'm restoring.

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

I'll see how it comes up with a bit of polish, but it looks like the sort of metal that always looks a bit dull. I need to touch up the rear derailleur as it's had some scuffs. I'll see how that goes before I touch the levers. I might have some gloss black Humbrol enamel paint left over from...

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

I've got these on the way: Do you think I stand any chance of getting them shiny? I'm tempted to paint the body black as the metal is so dull. The combination of black with chrome levers would give them a Super Record look.

I'll try the WD-40 and aluminium foil 👍 I picked up some T-Cut as well today. The handlebars and front derailleur have arrived. Pictured here with the stem I intend to use. The derailleur is filthy, but looks to be in fair condition and in working order. I think it will just fit in my sonic...

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

Yes, though if I'd costed up all the parts I wanted for the Carlton in advance, I might have ended up with the Mottram instead 🤣 Super Record rear derailleur incoming. Record front derailleur. Cinelli handlebars. Weinmann brake levers. I would have gone for the Neuvo Record, but I have a...

    Carlton Frame for sale

I bought the Mk.5 and started a thread on it here: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1979-carlton-professional-mk-5-restoration-advice-needed.483350/ The ebay seller was listing it on behalf of his father who had owned the bike from new and won a few cups racing in his younger days. He...

    Mercian built Sid Mottram £150

I came very very very close to buying this! 🥰 I only decided against it because it was too good and I wanted a project to work on.

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

Thanks. That looks similar to the one I have, but it's only 14mm. I'll get a new one for next weekend and the fun can continue!

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

I was a bit overdramatic in my previous post, after a second dose of penetrating oil they came out without a problem. My 15mm socket won't fit in the crank and I need to buy the right spanner for the bottom bracket , so I think that's the frame on hold for the time being.

Wax would definitely be easier than lacquer and less risk of me messing it up. Which wax do you use? Sadly, I don't think these dust caps will come out without getting destroyed.

The Moducel bike looks great! Nice to own something with a bit of history to it. Thanks for providing those articles/ads. Very interesting to see how the bike was in its team spec. Are those Nuovo Record or Super Record derailleurs do you think? Cinelli giro d'italia handlebars would be a...

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

Thank you. I was surprised there was only one other bidder on ebay, but perhaps people were put off by the straight handlebars and the more recent parts. One unusual thing I have noticed is that the detail on the lugs hasn't been painted. I can't see evidence of a respray and the seller said...

1979 Carlton Professional Mk.5 - restoration advice needed

Hi All, I'm new to this hobby. I recently did some light restoration/recommissioning work to a Raleigh Equipe that I picked up very cheap as a bike that I could leave at the station without worrying about it getting stolen. I enjoyed tinkering with the Equipe so much that I've been on the...
