    Elswick Turbo 6

I'm pretty sure the lights that could use that bracket on the forks were discontinued around 1984, but I suppose that wouldn't necessarily stop Elswick using them. You should be able to find date codes on some of the components to give you a fair idea of the year.

    27" Steel Wheel dilemma

I would look out for a pair of nice-ish complete wheels in 27" so you can use the bike and deal with the original wheels at your leisure. There are various tricks for rejuvenating chrome (oxalic acid and tinfoil are two IIRC), but once it's shot it's shot tbh. It depends whether you want a 100%...

    I think it'll be a Sachs/Huret Eco derailleur.

Ebay 'go between' in the US

A quick look at shipito.com suggests that they will pay for the item too, so the seller need never know it's going to the UK. I hadn't heard of that service, it might be a cheaper way to get the 27x1 1/8 tan wall tyres I've been after. Does anybody have experience of getting tyres shipped by them?

    Number plates on bikes? Really?

It's been done before in Australia, Canada, some US states and various other places https://www.flickr.com/groups/bicycle-license-plates/

Advice on Gumwall tires for a complete beginner

Re: Re: That number is the width of the tyre in mm, so the 28C is slightly fatter than the 25C (they also get taller as they get wider). You could even go slightly wider if you wanted but I think 28 is a good width. The extra 3mm isn't much but it'll make a bit of a difference on your commute...

Advice on Gumwall tires for a complete beginner

The Michelin Dynamic Classic http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mich ... -prod61961 is probably the best bet for a tyre that looks the part. I've not done a lot of miles on mine but they seem decent enough. I would probably go for the 28C rather than staying at 25C.

    What brakes and levers ?

Re: Re: I think you're describing cantilevers there, so what you did was perfectly fine but your terminology is potentially misleading. V-brakes have a much greater mechanical advantage than calipers or cantilevers so they levers used with them have less mechanical advantage. I've ridden a...

    DAWES FOX

A picture of the bike and the problem area would help, but from what you're saying it sounds as if adjusting the mudguard stays would fix it. I know my Fox would originally have come with 27" wheels, though it had 700C when I got it. It shows 27" as the only option in this catalogue too...

    Retro Raleighs

Are you sure the Medale isn't from 1981? Everything about it looks like early 80s to me.

My neighbour just dumped this on my drive...

I would take it as a challenge to salvage everything but the rubber and cables. You can still get 26x 1 1/4 tyres from one of the online shops (possibly CRC). Your wheels will be 597mm and 700Cs are 622, so that's 12.5mm bigger on the radius, which I think you just have room for. I can try 700C...

    Dawes ID

The only thing late 70s about that is the back light. For a bike with centre pull brakes and high flange hubs (i.e. a reasonably good spec) to have a cottered single chainset I would say it's a good bit older than that. The handlebar stem is an older type too. Have a look through the Dawes...

    show off your Tourers

Mine is a bit unimaginative compared to the others on this thread, a Dawes Super Galaxy from about 1982. I'm in the process of fettling it and trying to smarten it up a bit. I've not been anywhere much on it yet but it's proving to be a lot nicer than my Fox to ride on 10-15 mile local runs and...

Problems with Shimano BL 1050 Brake Levers, Please Help!

You should be able to undo the bolts without too much trouble, and the Loctite should still do its job when you tighten them again. I personally hate them but there is no reason why you shouldn't fit aero levers. I think you would have to replace the brake cables and the bar tape, and put up...

    bicycle. sex. thats it.

It was Rich34's '76 Galaxy - now The Dawes Galaxy thread!

That does look nice, exactly the same frame as mine I think. That style of covering on the bars always looks great, but I suspect it wouldn't if I tried it. What tyres have you got on there? I'm looking for 27 x 1 1/8 tyres that aren't Continentals or £££.
