I found that the Clarks CP100 brake pads you get in Halfords both look the part and worked well on my Galaxy. Before that I had a set of Velo Orange salmon pads, which were awful.

It's definitely better with two chain whips. They let go very suddenly so make sure there's nothing in the way of your knuckles when it does.

Re: For a triple you should really fit a longer BB axle and you might have to change the front derailleur too, and possibly the rear derailleur. It would be cheaper and easier to fit a 14-28 sprocket on the back, you shouldn't need to change anything else. Use Sheldon Brown's Gearing...

Tool kits that are worth having tend not to be much cheaper than buying the items individually. I got one of these recently http://www.halfords.com/cycling/tools-m ... le-cutters and they make a huge difference, especially for gear outer cable. I couldn't see them much cheaper anywhere else...

The Brooks B17 saddle will be original, they have date stamps in them too. I'll have a look tomorrow and tell you where to look. I can't decide if the triple is original or not. I think it's the same age as the bike so it might have been an upgrade when it was new.

The frame number won't do any good, the best bet is to look for date codes on components. The head badge changed in, I think, 1981, so that's one possible clue. £70 is a very good price if it's in reasonable condition, you see some very ropey ones for more.
