What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I no longer need to hope, I have achieved it and ridden it. I have tasted the fruit of the gods. I did run the numbers and 22/40 is almost identical to 20/36. I find the pushback about low gearing peculiar. I don't see people complaining at people riding e-bikes which takes away much more of...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Nothing to do with 'need'. I am allowed to have low gears if I want and that is what I want. I could probably manage to get up most hills on a single speed (I am not the fat slob you are implying) but I definitely wouldn't enjoy it. I find the idea of low gears fun. Not sure why it is such a...

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Not to be a stickler but leaving it stored in that gear is even worse as it will constantly be under maximum strain. That is what I understand from what were the no-no gears anyway as the chain will be stretched constantly. Only saying for your benefit, you can of course do what you want with...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I looked at the hanger yesterday when taking off the derailleur to reverse the b-screw and looked very straight. I think the gear cable could be the issue. Also, just by eye, I looked for the alignment of the derailleur in relation to the cassette and looked straight too. Btw my chain is 9...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I have switched to 2x now anyway since I never used the big cog on 3x anyway. Never understood why you would want to pedal when going downhill. 70 gear inches is my top on 32/12 and that works fine for me for flat riding. I would not use small, small cogs anyway because it is bad for the chain...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I notice people like to discourage me from tinkering as they think I am not qualified to do it. They think I not able to process information and will end up doing nothing, which is not accurate. I bought a bike and am improving it. Nothing complicated about that but people say I am 'over...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

While I noticed that the bike when I got it had new brake cables it seems the gear cables are old so perhaps that is the issue. The outer casings look good and not worn but looking at the exposed cable it is dirty and rusty so could be decades old. Could that cause indexing issues?

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Hi, thanks for the pictures. Yes your before looks just like how mine is now. Very close. It clears it though and works fine so I don't know if there is a need to buy a derailleur hanger unless it would cause some kind of excessive wear so close to the cassette?

Why you going big-big on those chains sir? More than one bike too so repeat offender!

    Bar ends yay or nay?

I think the shortish ones with a slight curve at the top would be my preferred, giving the 90 degree angle and an extra one at the top of the curve. The big L ones seem excessive I think. I had those back in the day and don't recall the extra L extension being that much good as I remember...

    A very gentlemanly reply.

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

What does 'try to life' mean? I have been working on it again today. I did manage some more clearance by doing the reverse b-screw trick. I actually found a couple of even longer bolts/screws which fit that thread in the garage. I tried one much longer than the original but it actually doesn't...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I got my 36t and put it on yesterday and a bit disappointed it doesn't clear the 36t cog cleanly! I thought it would be easy enough going by what people say about shimano being conservative in their maximum low cog specifications and 34t being listed as that and 36t being only 2 above. It...

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Well I am riding 90% roads or just light gravel. I have ridden plenty standing up in my life. I see no need to stand up. I had a bmx for a few years I know what it is to stand and ride. I ride for comfort and leisure now, not to prove myself to anyone. Standing I also read is bad for the knees.

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Well there is still comfort while in the saddle. I however do not like getting out of the seat at all, that is why I like the low gears to avoid having to resort to that, so don't know if that would nullify bar ends for me? I remember using them while sitting when I had them in the 90s and...

    Bar ends yay or nay?

What is it that one is pulling when climbing? Aren't you rather pushing into the front wheel, or is it a case of both pull and push? I just had a quick look at for sale and they were going for £25 which seems rather pricey for out of vogue 2nd hand items which are just a couple of bits of...

How hard (moreso costly) is it to put a modern drivetrain on a vintage mtb?

I lived in sheffield for a couple of years. Some of those hills in sheffield were mad especially the thought that a city is just plonked on top of all of it. Machester almost no hills. Sheffield almost all hills. Leeds a good mix of gradients.

    Bar ends yay or nay?

I got into MTB in probably mid 90s when they were just becoming all the rage. I see in the intervening quarter century they are now shunned. Is there any practical reason for either their use or descent from popularity? In other words did they have any practical benefit even when they were...

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

Ah I didn't think of the closer ratios aspect. Anyway I am very happy with 2x, it is ideal for me really right now. I have also got the hang of double shifting when moving from middle to 20t granny so it isn't a dramatic jump like if you only dumped into granny without a cassette shift as...
