Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

18 is my current lowest. Having been on a few rides with this new bike now I would say that is bare minimum to get up slopes. I was on an 11% today, not too steep you may say, but it was about a mile long. Not exactly the same all the way but it was all pretty steep. I was ok with 18 but less...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

You have cropped the left side so I can't see what the other axis is but I can I guess infer it is largest, 40, on the first left and going higher (gearwise) thereafter. Indeed, I certainly wouldn't expect to use 14 all the time but it is there for when it is needed. Either extreme ascent or...

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

People say that going lower than 18 gear inches is 'pointless' but this seems another great example of where dropping lower than normal saves you when you are 'bonked' as they call it. That reminds me of a green road/bridlepath I went down and up day before. It was only a small section between...

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

Ok I usually have avoided bridlepaths when walking and especially the old railways because usually other people on them and I like my solitude! Can you also find quiet ones? I suppose it depends on how close they are to conurbations and in the past I was walking out from large cities, or the...

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

I thought it is illegal to ride on a footpath with a bike so isn't that 100% not? I thought only bridlepaths are allowed to cycle on.

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

As an aside could you offer more tips on finding places to ride like this? I have walked in the country on and off for years and only just taken up cycling again and not really thought how I would find off roading routes other than the obvious bridlepaths and walkers get annoyed if you ride of...

Manual is old school tbf. My friend of the time showed me in the 90s in the context of bmxing.

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

Got most things working nicely now. Got the chainrings back on. Also fixed the brakes. The issue was that there is a thicker spacer and a thinner spacer, one for each side of the brake pad attachments. I noticed that the thicker spacers were on the inside next to the block and the thinner on...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Btw does that low gearing get used much? I calculate it at 14 gear inches. People say that lower than 18 is a waste and you won't be able to stay upright but I have seen threads online where people go way lower and say it gets good use. I read one person as low as 13 and said they were using it...

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

I am actually going to put the big ring back on to have a working bike again. I have also decided against going for large back sprockets, which is what spurred the idea to go 2x in the first place since I was informed that 3x is a no go with big back sprockets. Since I do not sure the big one...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Thanks for the information. Sounds like your original setup is the same as how mine is right now however I have 20 up front. The change from 38 (on my previous bike) to 32 on the middle is really nice for gentle climbing. As I re-evaluated I have come to the thought that going too big on the...

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

I think that is what it is. I was able to get it off with the help of this video. I managed the same job with one of the tools that was in the bike bits box. Don't even know what the tool was but it worked by the same method as in the video. I got the one behind the crank off to compare and...

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

Can anyone suggest how I could get that stuck one off without the tool? I got a great suggestion elsewhere that I can modify those existing nuts and screws rather than buying new ones. That will save me a few bob and days waiting for stuff to arrive if I just hack the existing ones to size...

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

Any all in one toolboxes of the things you mentioned for decent price? Will take ages to lookup each individual one for all the different makes and options and such. I wanna get back to my tinkering asap!

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

Indeed, people keep chastising me on a none tinkering forum saying I am wasting so much time over analyzing and doing unnecessary stuff when I could just have bought a new bike and been riding it for several months. Totally misses the point that tinkering is half the fun!

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I have been riding on my new 20/28 front/back and could still do with some more. Not because I need it. 18" is great for most but a few lower will be better for serious hills. I am not talking about everyday stuff, which 18 covers but the long monsters. Also though I feel bigger in the back...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Hi, revisiting this thread now I have my new bike. I found out today the RD on it is XT RD-M771. Is that of similar spec to yours? I wasn't able to find the datasheet for your one but for mine it says 45t/33t for SGS/GS and max of 34t for both. I think mine is the GS version as it doesn't look...

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

Well I thought I would see what it looked like taking it off and I have buggered myself as I have a none working bike now. 🤪 I got the nuts off no problem, in hindsight I realized I got lucky here because they were probably just ceased because I had no tool to hold the slotted nuts in place. I...

Help with maintenance for GT Bravado

I will add this here rather than make a new thread... Can I make the Sugino Impel (I guess it is impel but definitely says sugino on the inner crank) triple into a double? I found a couple of threads online where people wanted to do the same but they wanted to get rid of the granny from what I...

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

Probably the online sphere mostly then. Can't say people have said anything to me in person one way or the other although the odd road cyclist has ignored me when I have hailed a fellow cyclists but maybe they were just grumpy people.
