The Exage front is a more modern replacement that will go in a drawer; I'll hunt down a 6100/600 to match the rear.

The filth was pretty impressive.

All apart.

And after that + a lot of elbow grease.

Almost there; I'll do a careful enamel paint fill to tidy up the logo engraving.

And all done! A nicely made chunk of metal that led onto great things for Shimano - later 600 of course, then Ultegra and Deore!

More tinkering on this now the garage has warmed up.

This has the press fit bearings with circlips to retain the bb spindle. They came off fine, but the bearings are very much stuck in the frame and the spindle well rusted onto them. Some "careful" hammering last night didn't shift anything so i might have to destroy the knackered bearings and cut/bash it all out.

Managed to get the stem rotating in the steerer, but it is _very_ stiff and I had no luck actually drawing it out. Don't want to mangle the fork so I could just cut it off and machine out the stub. Any bright ideas welcomed before I go that far.

BEFORE YOU CUT THE STEM! Have you definitely whacked the wedge out? Did you undo the bolt in the quill a couple of turns and give it a couple of sharp hits with a hammer and feel the wedge come loose? If it’s still jammed in the bottom of the quill you’re going to struggle to get it out.

My personal experience though, if you can move it you’ll be able to work it out eventually with the help of some WD40, PlusGas etc.

Yeah it's had a good soaking, I'm not in too much of a hurry so will persist for a while before cutting anything. I'll also definitely check the wedge, thanks @Jonny69 😁

I’ve found putting the stem in the vice and twisting/pulling the fork upwards off the stem is a lot easier than trying to pull the stem itself upwards. Might be worth a go before resorting to cutting anything.

I think you’ll get a better purchase pulling on the bars, especially with your natty soft jaws that fit the fork! 3D printed? Hold the fork higher up near the crown so it all flexes a bit less. Sorry if I’m stating the obvious!
