The Weird and Wonderful Bicycle Components Thread!

Thanks for posting these, fascinating. Amazing to see the colour lineup of pedals and shift levers, and to read how Dino was the mastermind behind all the design choices. Explains some of the more off the wall designs and the mixed up naming conventions!

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

A successful half hour in the garage now has the BB removed. I popped off the bearing seals, drilled/yanked out the ball retainers, then pushed all the balls to one side and tapped out the axle. Then I used my headset cup remover to tap out the outer races. The axle is soaking in...

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

Hopped in the car this morning and made an early visit to the Big One jumble down at Chalfont St Peter. As always an excellent selection of bikes and bits to be had, I didn't go too wild but got a few small parts for this project and a couple for another more modern machine (the pedals and...

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

I can only get the forks down so far before they foul on the sliding part of the movable jaw! I will try some combinations of rotating the whole frame around and holding different bits to see what works. The jaws are just magnetic urethane soft inserts with various pre formed cutouts. Very...

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

Checked and the wedge is free, I will try pulling the fork this weekend.

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

Yeah it's had a good soaking, I'm not in too much of a hurry so will persist for a while before cutting anything. I'll also definitely check the wedge, thanks @Jonny69 😁

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

More tinkering on this now the garage has warmed up. This has the press fit bearings with circlips to retain the bb spindle. They came off fine, but the bearings are very much stuck in the frame and the spindle well rusted onto them. Some "careful" hammering last night didn't shift anything...

    Spotted on the street

I was visiting Barcelona last weekend and spotted several classics, ridden and chained up. I only took these pictures though! The most common old steel bikes I saw were Peugeots, Merciers and a few Orbeas, all in pretty good nick considering their age. A dry climate helps I'm sure. :cool...

    Spotted on the street

Once a nice Claud tourer.. a Majestic I think? Now looking a bit tired and with that student runabout checklist; Gatorskins, broken mudguards, slammed saddle! I saw this one couple of weeks ago and then spotted another almost identical in the pile of BSOs at my local bike co-op. The...

    Modolo brakes.

Some of the later Modolo brakes seem to be listed with pretty high prices too. Again it feels like that pricing is rather aspirational! Modolo continued it's relationship with Mavic into the late 80/early 90s with the 440 SSC calipers, and their matching levers. They came with the same plastic...
