If you give an idea of budget, frame size and potential usage then you might get some bikes offered here that may be suitable.

It has caliper type brakes so the tyre size will be limited, You should be looking and a bike with cantilever brakes if a tourer with fatter tyres is what you want.

    '91 Team Marin restoration (slow)

With this in mind I think this is definitely a classic case of biting the bullet and taking the frame to a professional outfit who will do it, usually without damage to the post for about £80. There are a couple of places in London that do it. I had one done in Ealing very sucessfully.

    Today's Ride

Sometimes things just don't go to plan. A couple of miles into the planned ride along the first part of the South Downs Way the left pedal started feeling a little strange. Kona Explosif 1994

I'll start the ball rolling by saying "it depends". Where are you based? I can only speak for UK pricing and would say, probably not as much as it was worth a few years ago. I bought a 1999 Explosif a few months ago and paid £200 for it. I have probably spent £100 on it since so you could say...

    Today's Ride

Wow it was windy today and I had a few errands to run so I combined a trip into the city centre with a detour via the end of King Alfred's Way. Took out this Bad Boy! Over the top of the 600 yard Hockley Viaduct Along the plague pits valley by St Catherine's Hill Along the River Itchen...

Dragging myself back to riding not just hoarding bikes and getting fat....

Absolutely resonates with me. I too have a rationalisation plan, it just seems incredibly tough to get bikes sold atm. I have three currently listed on Gumtree and not a sniff. Well a couple of sniffs that led to nothing. Also one on ebay and again apart from the occasional question, nothing...

Another interesting fact to ponder is that I recently bought a complete 1982 Raleigh Record Ace for less than that coffee!
