Loving the collection! My first mountain bike was a Peugeot Ranger 10. Every now and again, I have a dig around the internet to see if I can find one the same, but to no avail.
I've spent a bit of time on the original saddle today.
So the final question is what to do about tyres?
I've got the original Joe Murray Maximum/Reaction tyres but they're too far gone. I did try to give them a cleanup but the sidewalls are crumbling apart. Any thoughts on what might be a...
Today I got it all cabled, the gears tuned up and brakes swapped and set up. It was so close to completion couldn't resist throwing on some spare parts just to get out for a ride.
I still need to restore the original Avocet R1 saddle and source some more original tyres. The 'foam' grips are...
I've just realised I've got the brakes the wrong way around. The Se (self-energising) ones were on the back originally. I would have thought it made more sense to have the more powerful brake on the front?
I've started putting things back together, refurbing the original components as I go.
Wheels - Striped, cleaned, new bearings, trued and tensioned: The bike still had the original brake blocks on it, albeit worn right through to the metal which left a few nice gouges on the rims. I ended up...
Added some decals today...
They transformed the frame, really giving it identity again. I liked the clean look so much I was tempted to leave it without the splatter, but it's not really in the spirit of the catalogue rebuild I'm going for.
Once I got splattering I wasn't disappointed. The...
The fame and forks are now back to bare metal. I just need to do a bit more tidying up around junctions and hard to reach spots. I ended up having to sand it all, I abandoned the paint stripper, it didn't do much in the end.
I've started to clean up the headset and bottom bracket, looks good so...
A little bit more progress today. I managed to complete the strip down, the bb and headset didn't put up too much of a fight in the end which was nice. The bearing surfaces seem to be in fairly good condition from an initial look, but I'll have a better idea once things are cleaned up.
I had a...
