I seen to remember quite a bit of chrome on the Peugeot 753s, big well respected manufacturer, good think they would know what they were doing?

maybe the French instruction sheet was shorter, or they didn't read it?

Iirc a lot of 753 and other top reynolds frames had cheaper/ tougher stays, and this wasn't always clear on the literature.
Additionally top products often weren't built with an eye on longevity.

Wasn't it something about chrome plating makes it brittle? A bit like rustless spokes were chosen over chrome where durability was a priority (before stainless became mainstream)

Yeah, I remember reading that a lot of big box manufacturers used 531SL or 653 for the forks and stays to cut down on the $$$s cost

You'd think they would say, but I'm not sure they always did

Some manufacturers had a beefed up down tubes on the basis that this tube takes the most stress over rough terrain or in crashes. Quite a few Italian frames used SPX down tubes, especially larger frames
