Hi all, new here…1988 Shogun Team Issue

Retro Newbie
New to this community, thought I’d register and hopefully share my love of vintage bicycles. I was recently gifted a 1988 Shogun Prarie Breaker Team Issue with all original parts. Full XT components, new Deity Supracush grips, and a reverse mullet setup - 26” rear with a 24” front! Frame is a Prestige Tange double butted, size is 18” and in great shape considering the age.

Just thought I’d share. Looking at getting a 1993 Nikishi FS3 soon. What’s this community’s opinion on that bike? Anything besides the hairline cracks to look out for?

Thanks again.

That's a nice find. Judging by the condition of the parts it looks like it's only been gently used. I can't imagine you'll find any cracks. They were pretty bombproof

Thank you! The one piece of history regarding this bike that’s missing is what team was this issued to. I’m thinking Japan or Taiwan, but unsure and google is no help. If you or anyone can help I’d greatly appreciate it.

Very nice! I wanted one of these so badly when I was at uni but had to "make do" with a Trailbreaker 3 that I then spent a fortune upgrading

Nice Shogun, a less well known and underrated brand. wrt 'team' I am not sure there was one ( original UK importer was 'Caratti Sport' so maybe search on that?) may have just been the designation used for the higher spec groupset on this one. The geometry and wheelsizes to suit female physique is an interesting slant - I hadn't appreciated that was a solution. this in the days before sloping top tubes. overall the only thing that lets these bikes down a bit is the plain gauge Tange tubing which is on the heavy side, no more so than comparable Saracens and Muddy Foxes from the same era though. Enjoy a little uniqueness there, cant be too many around.

Don't think it will have been issued to a team. From memory (which may not serve me well these days) there were different levels of Prairie Breaker - Expert; Pro and Team Issue that will almost certainly have had LX (or 500LX); DX and XT or their year specific equivalents.

Just like my ever so 'umble Trailbreaker came in 1;2; and 3 with basic Shimano SIS; 200 GS and 300/400LX (or something like that).

Team Issue was just a name given by various manufacturers to their top of the line (or close) bikes, Marin for example. Lovely Shogun btw.
