Forgive my ignorance re all things cantilever brakes (assuming they're cantilever) how do these work? It seems counterintuitive to me, in that pulling on the lever seems to brake one side but not the other.

Looks like there's a bit of pushing and pulling going on, interesting set-up, wondering how effective it is
