Zinn 753 19"

Re:

Everybody should have a go at building wheels at some point.

Tedious but satisfying

Time for a long overdue update.

I stripped the bike of the m900 parts and treated then touched up the paint. It doesn't look pristine up close but I wanted to preserve the history rather than make it look like a new bike. For anyone interested, the frame weighs 2149g and the fork 922g.

My initial plan was to rebuild it and ride it with the m900 parts which have been on it for the last 25 years, but I ran into an issue with the headset. The top nuts wouldn't screw down straight. This was the Dura Ace 7410 that it came with. I'd noticed that it was crooked but assumed the headset was damaged so tried a King one, which was the same. This derailed my plans to build it as was, and put it on the back burner for a few months, until I asked someone to find out what the issue was. It turned out the headtube had never been faced properly, as it was 0.7mm out on the top of the headtube. With that sorted (Thanks Dan!) and relieved that there was nothing seriously amiss, I continued amassing the parts for the rebuild.

I actually finished it a couple of weeks ago but haven't managed to get any decent pics of it before now (and these taken tonight don't do it justice anyway).

The 130 spaced dropouts proved fairly difficult to source some wheels for, so I ended up buying a 135 rear and respacing and redishing it myself.

Re:

My fav British built bike. All 753, maybe would like the unique Zinn segmented fork in 753 too but sure is lovely as it is. How does it ride ? Unique feel ? Lively handling ? climbing ? Stability down hill ? Anything it compares to ? :)

Cheers guy, I appreciate the comments.

I can’t do a ride report yet because I’ve only been a short spin to test the set up. I’ll add one when I’ve been a proper ride, and pop some pics up to satisfy Neil at the same time!

Regarding the segmented forks, this one predates the Z-753 so the unicrown forks are correct. I’d say it’s like mine is a Team Comp whereas a Z-753 is like a Yo.

Good stuff. Look forward to that ride report. Personally i prefer the ride of the Team Comp, more comfy for all day riding. The Yo, depending on which model, has a stiffer race bike feel, a bit like comparing a superfast GT cruiser to a car modified with hard sus set-up for track. Both amazing to drive but adapted for their specific needs. That being said, a Yo is still a comfy ride compared to a bone jarring stiff Alu framed bike.
