You are all bad, bad people........

Dirt Disciple
So there's my '91 Stumpy Team quietly retiring in my garage and I come across this site - and the dilemma begins. Do I try and undo the sins of the past and get back to stock spec ? Do I just restore it's dignity with some knobblies and the right size bars and just get out and ride it ??

So, the story...

I got this bike in the early nineties from my brother bone stock except for a new rear wheel and replacement XT mech and thumbie after some kind of mechanical issue. I rode it as it was on sunday rides before semi retiring then coming over all fit and trying some triathlon, so the first of a number of sins were visited upon it. A pair of Mavic 217s were built on STX RC hubs and the original (knackered to be fair) wheelset put on a commuter hack which I later sold. Skinny slicks went on, with a Control Tech seat pin, v-brakes, grip shift x-ray and the bars got cut down, and it got ridden in two London Triathlons before I bought a race bike. It then got new bars and some compromise knobblies and a fitment to attach a trailer buggy , and then a trailer 'bike' before the kids got big enough for their own bikes, I bought an Enduro Pro and the poor old Stumpy was relegated to station bike - though it's not been to the station too often !

So, I still have the XC Pro canti's and XC Pro/XT thumbies - what's the consensus ? For the moment I'm tempted just to put some full width black bars back on, keep the V's and grip shift on it, restore it's dignity with some knobblies and get out and ride it, or should I be searching out '91 XC Pro rear mech, original seat pin and wheelset, period Flite saddle and a Smoke/Dart combo ??

Would be interested in buying / trading original bits, so the V-brakes, Control Tech pin, 3x8 Grip Shift X-Rays, 217/STX RC wheelset and Specialized BG saddle (from a 2001 or so Epic) could be up for grabs.

Let me know, best wishes all
Simon

{maniacal laughter}Welcome to the asylum!{/maniacal laughter} :p

As tintin has said just fit knobblies and ride. Not all bikes have to be stock to be retro. As a bike that's been owned for a while it's been upgraded as and when necessary. Imo this adds character to the bike.

Agreed :D

Great bike, definitely ought to be used.

Aside from the tyres, most of what you've done is sensible upgrades that you should obviously keep if you like them. The possible exception being the saddle - the bike deserves a Flite, no doubt about it.

The things that are extremely retro are the huuuuge stem, the narrow bars with bar ends and the saddle as far forward as it will go. Must make for a good triathlon posture, similar to the retro xc head-down style. But surely it's not very suitable for technical xc with that stem?

yes puts some nobbies on and ride it. while you're at it, turn that seat post right way around. ;)
